MABLETON IMPROVEMENT COALITION

NEWSLETTER

February 1, 2015

From the President...

We have had some long, rainy days recently, but the advantage of living here is that you know that spring is just around the corner.  So, too, is MIC's Annual Meeting!  We will announce a March date shortly.  The Annual Meeting is a great time to connect with your neighbors and find out what's happening here in our community.  If you want to get involved with MIC or another volunteer group, the Annual Meeting is the place to make those connections.

And, while you are thinking about Mableton, click here to renew your membership.  Your dollars are needed to cover our administrative costs and your membership gives us "strength in numbers" when we advocate for Mableton.

Be sure to contact me -- phone or email -- and let me know what's on your mind about Mableton.

Sincerely,

MIC's Mission

The MIC Board works to carry out MIC's mission of promoting activities, enhancing communication, and facilitating initiatives that will benefit the welfare of the community and its spirit.  MIC's focus is people, community services, and economic development.

What does the Board Do?

Board members are not compensated financially for their MIC service; we are all volunteers.  The Board is responsible for overseeing MIC operations, finances, determining MIC positions on zoning cases, appointing MIC officers, modifying bylaws, and listening to the community as we formulate MIC policies and projects.

Apply for the Board Online

Candidates for the Board must submit their applications online by February 25th.  Click here to access the application or to learn more about the process. Click here to read the bios of MIC's current Board members.  MIC Board members are your neighbors - please apply now so that you can join them!

What does it take to be a MIC Board member?

A passion for Mableton, a willingness to learn even more about our community, an interest in working with people, and the time to commit to monthly Board meetings, committee meetings and projects. Each MIC Board member is expected to chair a committee or lead a project of his or her choosing. The rewards are many - new friends and connections in the community, a sense of accomplishment and the knowledge that you are making our world just a little bit better. MIC Board members must also be MIC members living in 30126 and at least 18 years old.

Zoning News
Coming up February 4th, 2015....
zoning sign small

At 1884 Old Alabama Road (Z-5), an application has been filed to change the zoning from General Commercial to Neighborhood Retail Commercial for an auto repair shop. The MIC Board has voted to ask for stipulations on any approval in order to improve the appearance of the property.  Among the stipulations requested are: paving and striping the parking lot, landscaping, removal of heavy equipment and building and sign re-painting.

An application has been filed to change the zoning from R-20 to OI ("Office Institutional") for 1092 Veterans Memorial Highway (Z-15) with the proposed use being a veterinary office.  The property includes floodplain along Nickajack Creek which is part of the proposed Nickajack Creek trail. The MIC Board has voted
to ask for stipulations on this property that would ensure the County's ability to build the trail, either through County purchase of the floodplain or the owner's granting of an easement that would allow for the trail.

At 381 Lee Road and several adjacent lots, Habitat for Humanity is planning to build eight new homes.  They have submitted a variance application that will be heard by the Board of Zoning Appeals on February 4th.  The variances are minor setback and relate to lot dimensions.  The MIC Board voted to support this application.

At 632 Puckett Drive, the owner has submitted an application for setback and parking variances for an auto repair shop.  This business has made significant improvements to the property and its appearance recently. The MIC Board voted to support this application, so long as stipulations related to parking and indoor vehicle repair were also included in any approval. This application will be heard by the Board of Zoning Appeals on February 4th.

Coming up in March....

The hearing for the application for a subdivision on Old Alabama Road (Z-86) on property surrounding New Harvest Baptist Church has been postponed to the March 3rd Planning Commission hearing.  The developer is working on an R-15 plan with an open space overlay.  For more information on this rezoning, contact Sonya Wheatley, a member of MIC's Zoning Committee.

Learn more at the next Connect the Comet Citizen meeting on Sunday, Febuary 15th at 4pm at Vinings Bank, 4135 Atlanta Road SE in Smyrna.  You can also visit their website or check out the Connect the Comet Facebook page.
