MABLETON IMPROVEMENT COALITION

NEWSLETTER

June 16, 2015

From the President...

Thanks for your  attendance  at MIC's Community Meeting and at the Town Hall hosted by Commissioner Lisa Cupid. As always, we shared information, made and renewed acquaintances and learned more about our community.

As part of those conversations, we realized that we had neglected to publish MIC's 2015 slate of officers.  As you know, after Board elections early each year, the Board itself selects it Chairman and then a President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. For 2015, Cherri Belew is serving as Board Chairman, Robin Meyer as Vice President, Michael Delano as Secretary and Bob Carreker as Treasurer. I am honored to be re-elected to another term as President.

Our Facebook page continues to be a busy place as many of you offer some very positive and constructive comments on events and activities in our community - and we love that. In that same vein, please do not hesitate to reach out to me for questions or comments. I am always ready to talk about Mableton!

Sincerely,

Joel Cope

Farmers Market News - Evening Hours and Food Trucks too!
Every Thursday, 8:30am to 12:30pm

We heard you loud and strong asking for evening or weekend hours for the Farmers Market, so we are excited to announce that some of the Market vendors will be at Food Truck Thursdays on June 18th and July 2nd. This will be an experiment to see how it works for the farmers - and for customers as well.

Come take in the live music, prepared food experience and take home some fresh locally grown produce, farm fresh eggs and gourmet seasonings!  Produce selection continues to improve as the growing season progresses.  Our thanks to the South Cobb Arts Alliance, sponsor of Food Truck Thursdays, for their support.

Our partner, Wholesome Wave Georgia, will have a representative at the Market Thursday, July 2nd, 8:30am - 12:30pm, to help low income folks who do not have a SNAP (formerly food stamp) EBT card check their eligibility and apply for benefits.  Send a friend, or better yet, bring a friend to find out more.  Click here  for details about the information needed when applying.  WWG assistance is completely confidential.  WWG doubles SNAP EBT purchases at the Market.  It's like a BOGO!

Visit Market Manager Dave McDaniel any Thursday morning through August 27th or email him with any questions.

Lions Club Offers Help with Litter Pickup
From the MIC Facebook page...

Barry Krebs from the South Cobb Lions Club posted recently that the Lions Club can supply pick up tools and trash bags to people who want to keep their neighborhoods litter free. We can also arrange bag pick up if needed. Barry asked for communication via Facebook, but if you'd rather use email, contact us and we will get you in touch with Barry.

The South Cobb Lions Club has officially adopted several important miles in Mableton and cleans up dozens of other areas all over town. If you are on Facebook, visit their page and see what they are up to! You will be impressed.  Consider getting involved with the Lions Club too.  They meet on the first and third Mondays of each month at 6:30pm at the South Cobb Community Center, 620 Lions Club Drive in Mableton.

Progress Towards Harmony Leland School Rebuild
$5 Million Set Aside

In a unanimous vote last week, the Cobb County School Board voted to earmark $5 million toward the rebuild of Harmony Leland Elementary School. This makes a total of $10 million earmarked toward the new school, which is expected to cost around $25 to $30 million. The current school houses more students and teachers each school day than allowed by the fire marshall and it is plagued with leaky roofs, inadequate electrical wiring, mold and other symptoms of a building that is obsolete.

Hats off to MIC members and friends who have advocated for the school.  The work is not complete, but this act by the School Board is a big step forward.

Zoning Meeting with Commissioner Cupid
Wednesday, June 24th at 6pm

District Commissioner Lisa Cupid hosts monthly meetings around the district to discuss zoning sign small pending zoning cases. Planning Commissioner Galt Porter usually attends as well, so this is a great chance to get more information and share your thoughts about these applications. The next meeting in Mableton will be June 24th at 6:00pm at the South Cobb Community Center, 620 Lions Club Drive in Mableton.

MIC Zoning Committee members will be there as well and we look forward to involving everyone in our analysis of each case.  Here are the current zoning cases we are working on:

  • Z-86 - a proposed subdivision on Old Alabama Road
  • Z-54 - an application for commercial zoning for an existing body shop on Powell Dr
  • Z-59 - an application for an expansion of industrial zoning on Veterans Memorial Highway adjacent to Cobblestone Creek subdivision

Interested? Have an opinion? Let us hear from you via email or we will see you on the 24th.

New Orleans comes to Mableton!
Saturday, June 20th at 8pm

The next free concert presented by the South Cobb Arts Alliance (SCAA) will be the Wasted Potential Brass Band, a bona fide New Orleans-style Second Line brass band based in Atlanta. The band is a favorite in parades, festivals and weddings in Little Five Points, Cabbagetown and Decatur. Come to the Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre on June 20th at 8pm to hear them here in Mableton.

Bring a blanket and sit under the stars, or take a seat in the covered amphitheatre and enjoy great music in our own backyard!  Tables close to the stage are available for a small fee.  Bring a picnic dinner or visit the new catering company and enjoy a taste of New Orleans for this event only.  Click here for details about the concert.  Click here for more about the entire season of free concerts.
