June 1, 2015

From the President...

On Tuesday, June 9th at 7pm, MIC will hold a Community Meeting focused on the new town square in the historic part of Mableton.   The meeting will be held at the South Cobb Community Center, 620 Lions Club Drive in Mableton. This meeting represents a golden opportunity for the members of the community to learn about the proposed town square. This is a project that has attracted attention and interest from local media and so please put this on your calendar and make plans to attend.

District Commissioner Lisa Cupid will hold a Town Hall meeting here in Mableton on Thursday, June 4th at 6:30 pm at the Girl Scouts' facility at 5601 North Allen RoadThis is a great chance to ask questions, learn about upcoming events and projects in our community and meet our Commissioner on the Board of Commissioners. Let's fill up that room and show Commissioner Cupid that we are an involved, concerned community.

Finally many of you have been getting on our Facebook page to offer some very positive and constructive comments on events and activities in our community - and we love that. In that same vein, please do not hesitate to reach out to me for questions or comments. I am always ready to talk about Mableton!

I hope to see you at both of these above events!

Sincerely,

Zoning News
Decided in May...

The Board of Commissioners approved an application for a Land Use Permit at  1811 Lafayette Drive  (LUP-11) for six months. At the end of that time, only three cars can be parked in the driveway, rather than the eight vehicles requested. The MIC Board  opposed the application in concert with a group of concerned neighbors.

Coming up in June...

On the corner of Floyd Road and White Blvd. (Z-52), an application has been filed for a zoning sign small Hardee's restaurant.  The MIC Board voted to remain neutral on this application, after working with the applicant's attorney to improve the appearance of the new building, ensuring that it will fit in with the predominantly brick buildings along Floyd Road. MIC's Facebook page hosted a lively debate about the pros and cons of this particular business. We appreciate the input! This application will be on the June 2nd agenda for the Planning Commission.

After being postponed in May, the Board of Zoning Appeals will hear a variance application for an ATM installation in the shopping center at 6200 Mableton Parkway (V-40) at the corner of Mableton Parkway and Factory Shoals Road on June 10th. The MIC Board has voted to drop its opposition to this application if the property owner will agree to make safety and appearance improvements to the property before the ATM is installed. Those agreements have not been finalized and the conversation is continuing.

At its May 13th hearing, the Board of Zoning Appeals heard and then held an application from the owner of 414 Francis Drive (V-82) who is seeking permission to drive and park vehicles on an unhardened surface.  The MIC Board has voted to oppose this application because of the precedent it would set. The case is expected to be heard again on June 10th.

Coming up in July...

An application has been filed by the owner of 5751 Powell Drive (Z-54) for rezoning from residential and planned shopping center zoning categories to CRC (commercial/retail center) for an existing automotive paint and body shop. The application would have been heard in June, but the applicant's attorney agreed to continue it until July.

Art Frame, LLC, located at 516 Veterans Memorial Highway (near the intersection with Pebblebrook Road) (Z-59) would like to change the zoning of adjacent property from Neighborhood Retail Commercial to Light Industrial in order to expand.  At MIC's request, the applicant agreed to continue the case until July in order to meet with Cobblestone Creek subdivision residents, who are impacted by the existing warehouse operations.

Questions? Want to get involved? Contact Robin Meyer, MIC Zoning Committee Chair. Also plan to attend Commissioner Lisa Cupid's monthly Community Zoning Meeting in Mableton.  The next meeting will be Wednesday, June 24th at 6pm at the South Cobb Community Center at 620 Lions Club Drive in Mableton.
