MABLETON IMPROVEMENT COALITION

NEWSLETTER

January 16, 2015

From the President...

To celebrate the centennial of Kiwanis International, the Georgia District has committed to giving the "gift of play" to the Matthews Boys and Girls Club here in Mableton.  This project is budgeted at $75,000 and local Kiwanis Clubs are working hard to raise the last $10,000 needed.

MIC members and friends have supported the Boys & Girls Club for many years with our Secret Santa program.  We are asking all MIC members and friends to consider supporting this Kiwanis Playground effort as well.  You can purchase personalized bricks to pave the way for the new playground or sponsor the project with a tax-deductible contribution.  Contact Kiwanis with any questions about the project.  Consider getting involved with the Greater South Cobb Kiwanis Club, too.

The groundbreaking is set for February 21st at the Club, located at the corner of Floyd and Fontaine Roads.  Playground construction will be completed in April.  The Boys & Girls Club has provided after-school and summer programming for Mableton children for decades.  This playground will give kids more options for healthy, outdoor activity at a time when too many of us, regardless of age, are far too sedentary.  Let's work together to make fun, outdoor play a part of growing up for everyone.

Watch this newsletter for news of MIC's 2015 Annual Meeting, which will be held in March.  Until then, please stay in touch - I'm always ready to talk about Mableton.

Sincerely,

Adopt-A-Mile Clean-up Set
Saturday, January 17th at 9am
AAM 2013

Our first Adopt-A-Mile of 2015 will be Saturday, January 17th, starting promptly at 9:00am. We will meet in front of the Pizza Hut in the Publix shopping center on Floyd Road. With the first Floyd Road improvement project complete, we have returned to the segment between the Post Office and the old Rite Aid store where Floyd and Hicks Roads intersect.  With the road widening and traffic islands, it's a bigger job than before, so your help will be greatly appreciated.

It takes only about an hour for MIC volunteers to pick up the accumulated trash and it's an hour well spent! Floyd Road will look a whole lot better when we are done. Wear sturdy shoes or boots and bring gloves if you like. We provide latex gloves, safety vests, trash bags, bottled water -- and a warm welcome.

Mentors Needed in Cobb County Schools
January is National Mentoring Month

In recognition of Cobb Mentoring Matters, the Cobb County School District mentoring program celebrates and recognizes all mentors past and present who have joined this movement.  Mentoring is linked to improved academic, social and economic prospects for young people, and mentors report that they too benefit from the interaction with young people.  Cobb Mentoring Matters envisions a community in which every youth experiences nurturing one-to-one relationships and community support, which in turn allows all youth to develop into their full potential, capable of making informed, responsible decisions as involved members of our community.

Anyone interested in mentoring youth in their community can  visit the Cobb Mentoring

Matters website and click on "I Want to be a Mentor" or call (770)819-5804 ext. 233 for more information.

More Construction On Floyd Road at Veterans Memorial Highway
Floyd Rd. Improvements
Cobb County contractors have begun work on a $7 million dollar project to improve Floyd Road Floyd Road between Clay and Veterans Memorial Highway, while also re-configuring the intersection with Veterans Memorial.  Raised medians will be installed along Floyd Road, similar to the medians recently completed north of this new project.  Two left turn lanes will be installed from southbound Floyd Road onto Veterans Memorial Highway.  On the west side, a 10-foot multi-purpose trail will be installed, linking to the new trail further north and eventually connecting to the Silver Comet Trail. Questions about the project can be directed to DOT.
