Planning for Mableton Day 2015 is underway and it's time for everyone to get on board!  The first Community Meeting will be held at the Mable House Arts Center on Tuesday, January 13th at 7pm.  Each committee will report its progress. Organizations competing for the the Community Spirit prizes will be there for orientation and volunteer opportunities will be explained.  

Mableton Day is Saturday, May 16th at the Mable House Complex. The day begins with the Mableton 5K and Mableton Jr. Fun Run, and continues with live entertainment, classic cars, vendors, arts and crafts, kids' corner and more!  Fun for the whole family right here at home.

Our first Adopt-A-Mile of 2015 will be Saturday, January 17th, starting promptly at 9:00am. We will meet in front of the Pizza Hut in the Publix shopping center on Floyd Road. With the Floyd Road improvement project complete, we have returned to the segment between the Post Office and the old Rite Aid store where Floyd and Hicks Roads intersect.  With the road widening and traffic islands, it's a bigger job than before, so your help will be greatly appreciated.

An application  for a subdivision on Old Alabama Road (Z-86) on property surrounding New Harvest Baptist Church is set to be heard by the Planning Commission on February 3rd. It was postponed in December and there are no zoning hearings in January.  The application is for 42 homes on this 18 acre tract in the RA-5 zoning category. The existing zoning is R-15 for 27 homes.  The MIC Board voted to oppose this application because the density does not fit the character of the surrounding neighborhoods and there are unresolved issues about stormwater and the layout and look of the community. Neighbors are circulating a petition in opposition to the development, preferring instead the current zoning.  For information about this rezoning, contact Sonya Wheatley, a member of MIC's Zoning Committee.

At 1884 Old Alabama Road (Z-5), an application has been filed to change the zoning from General Commercial to Neighborhood Retail Commercial for an auto mechanic shop.  Neighbors are encouraged to contact Robin Meyer with thoughts on this application.

An application has been filed to change the zoning from R-20 to OI ("Office Institutional") for 1092 Veterans Memorial Highway (Z-15) with the proposed use being a veterinary clinic.  The property includes floodplain along Nickajack Creek which is part of the proposed Nickajack Creek trail.

From the Nickajack/Fontaine access point, the trail includes a boardwalk over the wetlands and continues along the Nickajack Creek.  You'll see the work of the Georgia Native Plant Society, marking native plants and removing invasive privet. The trail continues to the ruins of the Concord Woolen Mill near the Silver Comet Trail.

If you'd like to focus your walk on the Mill ruins, the closest access point is at the Silver Comet Trailhead is on Concord Road.  Leaving the parking lot, walk down the paved walkway to the Silver Comet Trail.  Turn left on the Silver Comet Trail and walk about two-tenths of a mile.  Then turn right and follow the paved trail.  This time of year, you'll see the Mill ruins right away.  The Concord Woolen Mill was built about 1847 by local businessmen and burned by Union troops during the Civil War.  It was rebuilt and operated for many years afterwards.

Ridwan Hassen, a graduate of South Cobb High School, has been named as one of 32 Rhodes Scholars in the US for 2014.  The scholarship will enable Ridwan to study at Oxford University upon graduation from Dartmouth.  A child of African refugees, Ridwan credits his parents with encouraging him to excel educationally, first in public schools and then at Emory and Dartmouth universities.  Ridwan and his four siblings have all graduated from college or are currently enrolled.

Ridwan's academic career has focused on computer science and neuroscience, but he is considering public policy studies at Oxford so that he can challenge himself in that arena. In 2013, Ridwan founded the Global Development Project to help communities in developing nations.  He has also served as a chemistry mentor, refugee tutor, youth counselor for the Boys & Girls Club and regularly visits South Cobb High School to speak with students there.

Cobb County Government and the Cobb County Branch  of the NAACP will celebrate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 19th at 9am. Those interested in performing during the celebration must audition. Entertainment such as dance interpretations, dramatic readings and musical performances are welcome.

Auditions will be held Saturday, January 3rd at 10am; Thursday, January 8th at 6pm, and Saturday, January 10th at 10am at the Jennie T. Anderson Threatre. The celebration's theme is "50 Years Later: Believe It, Achieve It." Performances will be limited to three minutes and should relate to the theme or Dr. King's message. The Theatre is in the Cobb Civic Center, 548 S. Marietta Parkway, Marietta.  Reservations for an audition are required; please call (770)425-5757.
