Anti-Terrorism / Training 
Foundation Funds 2016 Conference On Domestic Counter Terrorism 

Every year, the Sheriff's Foundation of Broward funds a counter terrorism conference for the Intelligence Unit of Region 7 of the Domestic Security Task Force. These conferences are an essencial step in the coordination  of counter intelligence resources for the prevention of, and effective response to terrorist acts in South Florida.

Foundation Donates $12k To Fund BSO SWAT Anti-Terrorism Training With The Federal Government 

The Sheriff's Foundation recently donated $12,000 to fund BSO SWAT high level anti-terrorism training with the Federal government. We congratulate BSO SWAT for their ongoing dedication to service!  
Foundation Donates $38k To Purchase Hand-Held/Portable Bomb X-Ray Device 

The Sheriff's Foundation recently donated $38,000 to purchase a portable/hand-held X-Ray device that would allow the Bomb Squad to safely and efficiently disable a bomb threat.  
Foundation Donates $361k To Purchase Night-Vision Goggles For BSO SWAT  

The Sheriff's Foundation just purchased 41 night-vision goggles for the BSO SWAT Team. These devices will allow first responders to maneuver in the darkness with coordination and precision to successfully engage threats.   
Crime Prevention 
Foundation Funds 13 Operation Medicine Cabinet/Shred-A-Thon Events Through Broward County  

The Sheriff's Foundation in partnership with BSO funded 13 monthly prescription medication free disposal events and free shredding events in the year 2015-2016 across Broward County to promote the safe disposal of unused, unwanted or expired medications and to safely dispose personal documents, check stubs, credit card offers, receipts and any other material that might contain sensitive information.

Sheriff's Foundation Donates $5k To Unity 4 Teens  
 
Unity 4 Teens (U4T) is a year-round before/after-school and summer youth development program that helps youth attain academic and social success. U4T partners with six Title I, Broward County, public schools serving 620 at-risk youth, ages 9-11, underperforming academically and residing in high crime areas. The U4T program engages youth at-risk of school failure, pregnancy, substance abuse (alcohol, tobacco, and marihuana), gang involvement, truancy, aggression, antisocial behavior, crime, violence, and other negative outcomes, by providing best practice preventive services, education, and case management.

The Sheriff's Foundation, in collaboration with Macy's, is proud to fund BSO Fire Rescue and Emergency Services' Just Drive Teen DUI Prevention Campaign for 2015-2016 featuring presentations by Renee Napier, of the Meagan Napier Foundation, and Eric Smallridge, the DUI driver who killed Renee's 20 year-old daughter.  In October 2015, Napier's heart-braking story touched the hearts of over 2,500 High School students in Broward County public schools and includes Meagan Napier's wrecked vehicle. Another 2,500 students experienced the presentations in May 2016.

Sheriff Foundation Donates $2k To Above The Influence Broward  

The Sheriff's Foundation funded this county-wide prevention program of the Broward County Public Schools with the goal for youth and families to gain more knowledge about building peaceful climates and reducing the incidents of bullying and other negative behaviors. This program includes a rally where students gather to support their decision to live above the influence, standing up to negative pressures, such as drugs and alcohol usage, as well as other influences with negative impacts.

On December 9, 2015, fifty students from across Broward County had the amazing opportunity to shop with Sheriff Israel. All deserving students were selected by their School Resource Officers (SRO's) and received a $100 gift card to spend at their pleasure. We applaud the academic and personal achievements of all the students and congratulate their SRO's for their commitment to the community they serve. The Sheriff's Foundation is proud to fund this amazing event which strengthens the bond between our youth and law enforcement. Happy Holidays!

Sheriff's Foundation Donates $8,500 To Reading For A Purpose  

SFBC provides funding to "Reading for a Purpose", the After School@Your Library program of the Broward County Library. SFBC funding provides anti-bias education books focusing on the development of an inclusive culture and respectful school climate by addressing issues of bias, name calling, bullying and cyberbullying. This program is overseen by the United Way of Broward County and the Children's Services Council. Afterschool services are provided in 11 libraries and one Community Center serving economically disadvantaged neighborhoods providing homework help, reading remediation, and computer access for elementary students with few safe and supportive environments.

Sheriff's Foundation Donates $5k To 2016 Walk Like MADD  

On Sunday, April 24, 2016, over 2000 supporters walked or ran for a common purpose: end DUI fatalities. The Sheriff's Foundation of Broward is proud to have sponsored the 2016 Walk Like MADD  & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5k. We congratulate event organizer (and Sheriff's Foundation Board Member) Heather Geronemous and the Fort Lauderdale MADD family for an amazing crime prevention event!

Sheriff's Foundation Donates $6k To HANDY (Helping Abused Neglected Disadvantaged Youth)  

In May the Sheriff's Foundation presented HANDY with a $6k donation at the HANDY 11th Annual Scholars Breakfast. Part of the funds were raised during the Sheriff's Cup Golf Tournament event in April.

Sheriff's Foundation Academy Event: BSO SWAT Anti-Terrorism Training Exercise    

On September 10, 2015, Students, Girl Scouts, Foundation Sponsors, and Board Members
attended the first combined educational event of the Sheriff's Foundation Academy and the Sheriff's Foundation Classroom - a BSO/SWAT full-scale anti-terrorism training scenario. This training tested the skills of BSO's SWAT team, Bomb Squad, K-9, Helicopter Unit, Communications Department, and the BSO Fire Rescue Department.

On January 7, 2016, Sheriff Israel briefed the board of directors of the Sheriff's Foundation of Broward, annual donors, annual members and guests on the initiatives and challenges facing BSO in 2016. The Foundation recognized three BSO Employees of the Year: Kari Pallotto (Law Enforcement), Dawn Bobo (Dept. of Detention), and Mario Artze-Ordiales (Fire Rescue). The Foundation also awarded three $1,000 donations to the following non-profit organizations in the name of the awardees: BSO Explorers Post 44, Police Memorial of Broward County, and BSO Fire Rescue Cadet Post 777. Congratulations to all!

Sheriff's Foundation Academy Event: Tour Of Criminal Investigations Laboratory   

On February 19, 2016, Students, Foundation Annual Members, Sponsors, and Board Members attended a private tour of the BSO Crime Scene Investigations Unit. Participants had the opportunity of performing fingerprint analysis under the supervision of BSO professionals. A big THANK YOU to Sgt. Sheriff's Foundation Classroom Event: Fire Rescue Training Exercise

DAVIE, Fla. (WSVN, Channel 7) - Taking a step beyond considering their future career options, a group of South Florida students got a hands-on opportunity to learn what it's like to be a firefighter. More than 300 teens and preteens stood on the sidelines and cheered on fire rescue cadets with the Broward Sheriff's Office. "Firefighters have to be quick but steady," said 13-year-old Trinette Bentley. "I might sign up when I'm 14," said student Katherine Delva, also 13.
Saturday's action-packed day at the Fire Academy was hosted by the Sheriff's Foundation of Broward County. "We have over 300 kids from HANDY, Hispanic Unity - their program, Unity for Teens - and Girl Scouts," said Juan Arias of the Sheriff's Foundation.
The event aimed to give area youth some excitement, education and a future career to consider in public safety. "It's about serious behavior, serious work, but it's done in an environment that shows the joy of the profession," said BSO spokesperson Michael Cassano.

Sheriff's Foundation Classroom Event: Bomb Squad Training Exercise

On Saturday, May 14, 2016, the Sheriff's Foundation Classroom gave Girl Scouts the hands-on opportunity to wear bomb squad equipment and to drive a bomb robot. "Everything we do in this agency is about making life better for young people," said Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel at the event. As part of the Sheriff's Foundation Classroom, the Girl Scouts also attended a K-9 training event in November, a Fire Rescue training event in March, and this final event with the Bomb Squad. "These young ladies had exclusive access to BSO law enforcement and fire rescue.
Class 1 Sheriff's Foundation Classroom Graduates     

The Sheriff's Foundation of Broward graduated it's first Class of the Sheriff's Foundation Classroom - a group of 60 Girl Scouts on Saturday, May 14, 2016. The Sheriff's Foundation Classroom gave Girl Scouts the hands-on opportunity to interact with BSO personnel and equipment in an educational environment. As part of the Sheriff's Foundation Classroom, the Girl Scouts also attended a K-9 training event in November, a Fire Rescue training event in March, and this final event with the Bomb Squad. "These young ladies had exclusive access to BSO law enforcement and fire rescue. They had a front seat educational experience to learn more about BSO's first responders," said Sheriff's Foundation Chairman Juan Carlos Arias.

BSO SWAT Sgt. Matten Awarded The Sheriff's Foundation Medallion 

The Sheriff's Foundation Medallion is awarded by the Foundation's Board of Directors to recognize an individual's contribution to the mission of the Foundation. SWAT Sergeant Matthew Patten has served BSO and Broward County for over 24 years and provided invaluable training to the members of Class 1 of the Sheriff's Foundation Academy and Classroom during a recent BSO/SWAT Anti-terrorism training exercise. SGT Patten's meritorious efforts advanced 3 of the 4 pillars of the Foundation's mission: Anti-Terrorism, Training, and Civic Education.

BSO K-9 Sgt. Sklar Awarded The Sheriff's Foundation Medallion 

BSO K-9 Sergeant Ian Sklar was awarded the Sheriff's Foundation Medallion for conducting the K-9 Training Exercise for the Sheriff's Foundation Academy & Classroom in November 2015. Thanks to Sgt. Sklar and his team, over 90 attendees participated in the "K-9" experience.   
Girl Scouts Troop Leader Rae Brewer Awarded The Sheriff's Foundation Medallion 

Shout out to the fabulous Raeann Brewer, Kowechobe Service Unit's Product Sale Manager and new troop mentor, for receiving the Sheriff's Foundation Medallion for assisting with the launch of a new initiative called the Sheriff's Foundation Classroom. She recruited 9 Girl Scouts troops...about 62 girls. The girls will be attending the first of several Classroom events next week where they will witness BSO K-9 training! Way to go Raeann! What a great opportunity for the girls and a great service to Broward County!

BSO Fire Rescue's Melanie Brocato Awarded The Sheriff's Foundation Medallion 

Melanie Brocato, BSO Fire Rescue Life Safety Educator, was awarded the Sheriff's Foundation Medallion for planning, organizing and executing the Fall 2015 Just Drive Teen DUI Prevention Campaign. Thanks to Melanie's outstanding efforts, over 2,500 teen students attended presentations in four public high schools.   
Sgt. Michael Natiello Awarded The Sheriff's Foundation Medallion

Sgt. Michael Natiello, BSO Dept. of Logistics/Regional Support Services, successfully planned, coordinated, and executed the 2015 Shopping with the Sheriff event of the Sheriff's Foundation, in which 50 deserving students chosen by School Resource Officers across Broward County enjoyed a shopping spree in recognition of their hard work in school. Sgt. Natiello's dedication and meritorious efforts advanced one of the four pillars of the Foundation's mission: Crime Prevention/Civic Education.  We congratulate Sgt. Michael Natiello for his outstanding efforts to expand the mission of the Sheriff's Foundation of Broward County and his performance reflects great credit upon himself and the BSO Department of Logistics/Regional Support Services.   
BSO Fire Rescue's Frank Correggio Awarded The Sheriff's Foundation Medallion 

Frank Correggio, AED Coordinator, Broward Sheriff's Fire Rescue Department, successfully planned, coordinated, and executed a 3-hour fire rescue training exercise conducted by cadets for the Sheriff's Foundation Academy & Classroom, in which over 300 youths from HANDY, Unity 4 Teens and Girl Scouts participated. Frank Correggio's dedication and meritorious efforts advanced one of the four pillars of the Foundation's mission: Crime Prevention/Civic Education.  We congratulate Frank Correggio for his years of service to Fire Cadet Post 777 and for his outstanding efforts to expand the mission of the Sheriff's Foundation of Broward County, his performance reflects great credit upon himself and the Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services.

5th Annual Sheriff's Cup Golf Tournament Raises Over $80,000 For The Sheriff's Foundation Of Broward

In April of 2016, over 250 players convened at the Weston Hills Country Club to battle for the 2016 Sheriff's Cup. 

The Sheriff's Cup Golf Tournament was introduced by the Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) in 2012. Billed as the "3 C's" (camaraderie, competition & charity) the tournament raises funds for the Sheriff's Foundation of Broward County. Funds raised benefited community programs focusing on public safety, education, prevention and awareness initiatives. Our thanks to BSO Lt. Robert Furman and his committee for another successful golf tournament!
