Week 6: 2 Corinthians 8:1-15
A Community of Generosity

In Paul's time, there was a social stigma associated with the giving of gifts. Those who gave were regarded highly for their abundance, while those who received were regarded lowly for their need. Paul wanted to build unity between churches and communities of varying regions and culture, so giving was essential for the survival of all the communities.

God's challenge is for us to be faithful givers and receivers of the abundant gifts God gives every person, whether it be money, time, or talent. All faithful giving and receiving comes with pain and joy; the pain is fleeting, but the joy endures.

June 5     A Community of Imperfect Treasures   Text: 2 Corinthians 4:1-15

June 12   A Community of Faith                  Text: 2 Corinthians 4:16 - 5:10

June 19   A Community of Reconciliation           Text: 2 Corinthians 5:11-21

June 26   A Community of Generosity                Text: 2 Corinthians 8:1-15

What is the shape of the community of Christ? How do we live faithfully, both to Christ and to our neighbor? In the midst the tensions and conflicts that surround the writing of 2 Corinthians, the letter is all about being the community of Christ.  While the accusations and dissatisfactions of many of the Corinthians (fueled by the Outsiders, or the "Super Apostles") center on Paul, the Apostle refuses to "take the bait" of his opponents.  By deftly steering the discussion to be less about Paul and more about Jesus' activity and presence within the community, Paul begins to sketch out the outlines of what it means to live as part of the New Creation Community in Christ Jesus.

Faith Family Breakfasts

Joy is  all   about food and Faith Family Breakfasts are all about sharing a table and fellowship.  Want to try out that new recipe?  Have summer guests and want to put them to work?  There are plenty of opportunities to host a summer breakfast - the kitchen is yours and the tasters are willing!  Check out the OPPORTUNITIES board for your turn to host!

Faith Family Breakfast's Free-will Offering

After each Sunday worship service in the summer, Joy Lutheran hosts a Faith Family Breakfast.  We get to enjoy pleasant conversations while eating a yummy breakfast made by a different family or service group.  There is a large glass jar on the buffet table for collecting free-will donations. This summer, the money collected each week will be spent on foods to supplement a daily meal for children offered at the Eagle River Boys and Girls Club.  Kids Kupboard in Wasilla is providing this free lunch service at 11:30 a.m., Monday - Friday, to any hungry child up to 18 years of age.  The food purchased by Joy will include fresh fruits,100% juices, vegetables, and nutritious kid-friendly snacks.  The Boys and Girls Club is located at 11700 Old Glenn Hwy., next to Arby's.  Director Tracey Hupe says that at least 90 -115 children PER DAY are being fed, and she is incredibly grateful for our generosity.  Thank you for helping provide for the needs of food-insecure children in our community!

A Silent Auction is planned for the beginning of October this year.  Lots more details will be coming, but we wanted to give you plenty of time for thinking, crafting, designing, creating and working on Silent Auction items for it.  In the past, we have had some pretty amazing items for auction and we are hoping for lots of those again this fall; we know you love them!

Remember the Food Pantry This Summer!
School is almost out, and with that end the Free and Reduced Breakfasts and Lunch program at schools that many of our Eagle River and Chugiak young people rely on will end as well.

This summer let's focus on:
  • Proteins: Peanut Butter, Spam (very popular), Tuna, Chili, etc.
  • Breakfast Cereals: Especially more healthy options.
  • Canned Soup (other than Ramen):  Easy to make, Good balance between protein and carbs.
  • Box milks: Doesn't need refrigeration.
