Rabbi's Message September
Rabbi Jerry Ram Cutler
I am getting older. I know that because I can't climb the stairs to my new apartment by taking two steps at a time. I have learned to be patient and take one after another. So, where am I rushing anyway? On September 26, the second day of Rosh Hashanah, I will be celebrating a birthday. It's not your ordinary run of the mill birthdays because I will be entering a milestone year. It is also significant because my mentor and teacher who taught me the basic rules of conduct, charity, deportment, caring, love, kindness, Rabbi Abraham Cutler, my revered father, died exactly 37 years ago to the day.
A major part of my soul went with him on his journey and I have yet to fully recover. Yes, I have married a most remarkable woman and together we kvel as we look upon our daughters who were never afforded the thrill and honor of meeting my father. I wish they had.
As I reflect on the bizarre coincidence of having the man who played such a major role in the conditioning and learning of my life having passed away on that particular day, I think that maybe there is a Talmudic or Kabalistic meaning to that twist of fate.
Had he lived a longer life, I never would have met or gone out with my beautiful Jeff as she, at the time, wasn't Jewish. Had I gone with her while he was still with us, the shock alone would have killed him. But, from our marriage came two of the most incredible girls any couple would be fortunate to have. Aside from inheriting my dad's intelligence and humor, they have, thanks to Jeff, inherited a profound love and dedication to Yiddishkeit my father had devoted his life to.
They have learned that the world is not their personal catering firm and that there are other people in the world who have equal rights to their own, that the truth is not black or white but gray.
They have learned who their true friends are and who turned out to be faithless. They have experienced the pain of loss of a loving grandfather and granny and Uncle Irwin, my brother, as well as the untimely passing of their good friends. So, they treasure the loves of those who remain. They have learned to be tolerant of the idiosyncrasies of others as they have their own mishugas, eccentricities as well.
So, the teachings of our fathers and mothers have filtered down from one generation to another. And, all this would never have come to fruition had my blessed and brilliant father not passed away on my birthday. I sometimes wonder, did he, with his macabre sense of humor orchestrate his demise as we began the New Year, on my birthday? Or, was it pre-ordained by a Higher Power? Did Rabbi Abraham Cutler, who, perhaps, was able to foresee the future, realize what Jeff, Chelsea and Tess would mean to me sanction the marriage? I would like to think so.
I look forward to seeing you at the High Holiday services. May it be a year filled with good health, good cheer, good news and lots of good mazel.
Much love, Rabbi Jake

Arne's Corner
Time Marches On
For New York Jews, spending time during the summer months in the Borscht Belt was as American as motherhood and apple pie. But if you were a guest at Kutsher's Hotel in the Catskill's, your memories and old photographs are now all that remain. The 1,300 acre resort that was sold in 2013 has been torn down to be replaced by a health and wellness spa.
Kutsher's was most famous for "LOTS" of Kosher food, legendary Jewish entertainers, a basketball camp and annual tournament frequented by Wilt Chamberlain. Built in 1907 by brothers Max and Louis Kutsher and later taken over in 1946 by Louis' son, Milton. Kutsher's was one of, if not the last, remaining hotels in the Borscht Belt.
Alas, an era gone by, so sad for those of us that remember.
This article is being written at a time of a "72 hour Truce" between Israel and Hamas. I'm putting on Tefillin, got my fingers crossed, saying my prayers, and wishing with all my might for a more permanent "fix." Yes! Israel is winning the war, but at the cost of 67 Israeli lives, not to mention the 1600 Palestinians (among the many victims abused by Hamas). As Israeli P.M. Netanyahu puts it, "We use missiles to protect our children, Hamas uses children to protect their missiles."
Do I need to mention? The "unbiased" UN has begun an investigation of "war crimes" allegedly committed by Israel against the Palestinians. Not the other way around. They don't even consider Hamas to be in violation.
Why does the U.S. support the UN? And for that matter why do we (the U.S.) send financial support to Hamas (a DECLARED terrorist organization?) Ask your congressional representative for the answers? I did.

THE ONE I LOVE
"The One I Love"...a Duplass Brothers Production starring Mark Duplass and Elizabeth Moss, would be better served as a Rod Serling "Twilight Zone" TV production. And, before you reach to any sordid and unwarranted conclusions about my critique, I must applaud the efforts of two first timers. director, Charlie McDowell for his directorial ingenuity and screenwriter, Justin Lader, for creating a sophisticated Hitchcockian love story.
"The One I Love," is a pleasant comedy on a weighty subject and is a credit to the creative talents of all of the aforementioned for making it as palatable as it is.
It is clever in its ingenuity and would have been better served had it been a tad shorter in its cleverness with less repetition.
The story begins simply with a married couple, Duplass and Moss, seeking marital advice from therapist Ted Danson. His advice is to go to a specific country home to hopefully reignite that initial spark they once shared.
After their arrival they individually discover a cottage on the property. From this point on, the story gets a bit complicated - but, very interesting and humorous. I can't divulge the ending because the spirit of Mr. Hitchcock will suddenly appear and threaten me with bodily harm. It's a good yarn and, if you have been paying close attention, not too difficult to untangle.
