A Designer Education
TM - tailoring the learning environment to fit each special child, means many, many different things. Sometimes it means bringing your dog to school.
For sensory sensitive children, possibly autistic, possibly ADHD, or maybe just children with a high sensitivity, adjusting the environment to put the focus on learning garners amazing results.
Panda going to school at Brock's Academy provides a great example.
Pets have been used for years in reading programs such as "Reading with Fido" which provide a fun and safe way for dyslexic children or other struggling readers to practice. However, Panda's role at Brock's Academy goes well beyond listening.
Panda comes to school at Brock's Academy with his boy and together they work through school lessons. Stroking Panda's fur helps our young student focus on the lesson. For this student, his dog Panda gives a sensory cue that relaxes him as well as pulls his focus onto the lesson and away from other environmental stimuli.
Brock's Academy has been designed to be a low sensory environment with low lighting and low noise. New parents who visit our center are sometimes surprised at how calm and quiet we keep the environment. However parents of an ADHD child, autistic child, or any other child sensitive to environmental stimulus know that environments that appear sedate to most people could be full of unwanted stimulus for their child. Our student struggled to stay focused even in Brock's low sensory environment.
At Brock's we understand that so now Panda comes to school.
With Panda at his side, this young student has the learning environment he needs to fully realize his unique potential.
Brock's Academy was founded on the belief that all children hold an inborn desire to learn and that great teaching finds a way to unlock the joy of learning buried within every child. To help his learning joy unfold, our young student simply needed to bring his dog to school. The power of the Designer Education
TM found at Brock's Academy is equally simple - we let him do it.
