TED
TED Video and Discussion Series

Saturday, June 25th
11:00am
Chris Maloney Lecture Hall

Anne Curzan
"What makes a word 'real'?"

Our next TED talk is by language historian Anne Curzan, entitled, "What makes a word 'real'?"  One could argue that slang words like 'hangry,' 'defriend' and 'adorkable' fill crucial meaning gaps in the English language, even if they don't appear in the dictionary. After all, who actually decides which words make it into those pages? Anne gives a charming look at the humans behind dictionaries, and the choices they make.  So for those of us who've wondered, "Where the heck did that word come from?", join us for an interesting look at how the English language is developing.

TED stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design, and the TED Talks feature experts in a variety of fields who present unique ways of looking at their respective fields of expertise.

Everyone is welcome to these free sessions.

A discussion will take place after the lecture.
