June News to Know
What's on tap?
Westlake's  2015 Water Quality Report  is here! This document, published annually shows what is in our water, what we test for, and the results of those tests.

This report was mailed out to all residents on May 27. If you have not received this report in your mail,  please contact Public Works Director Jarrod Greenwood for a hard copy.  Additionally , you may access the report through the above link or on our town's website

The watering needs of your lawn changes with the climate. As our rains have slowed and the temperatures climb, check out the weekly watering advice map from  Save Tarrant Water and learn how much and how long you need to water to keep your lawn healthy each week. This site also contains many useful conservation tips for both indoor and outdoor watering.

As a reminder, Westlake follows a year-round water schedule based on your home's address.
  • Residential customers whose addresses end in odd numbers (1, 3, 5, 7 or 9) are permitted to water lawn and landscapes only on Sundays and Thursdays.
  • Addresses ending in even numbers (2, 4, 6, 8 or 0) may water on Saturdays and Wednesdays only.
  • Non-residential customers, including apartments, businesses, parks and common areas, can water only on Tuesday and Fridays. No watering is allowed on Mondays.
The time of day restriction, which prohibits outdoor watering with sprinklers between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., continues to be in effect. Watering by hand-held hose, drip irrigation or soaker hose is allowed at any time. Residents are encouraged to limit such watering to a maximum of two hours per day.
Westlake awarded Transparency award from State Comptroller

Opening financial books to the public, providing clear and consistent pictures of spending, and sharing information with taxpayers in a user-friendly format are some of the reasons the Town of Westlake was one of the first four cities to recently earn the prestigious 2016 Texas Comptroller Transparency Star for Traditional Finances. Other inaugural municipalities receiving this award include the cities of Carrollton, Andrews, and Abernathy and others have now followed suit.

The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts originally launched the Leadership Circle Program to recognize local governments across Texas that strive to meet a high standard for financial transparency online. The Town of Westlake received this award in March 2014 and March 2015. However, in January the program was discontinued and replaced with the Transparency Stars Program, a more rigorous program recognizing local governments for going above and beyond in their transparency efforts. Westlake Academy garners another accolade!
Westlake Academy's list of  achievements  is getting longer, with the latest news from the Texas Smart Schools  Initiative, a data integration platform that empowers Texas parents and educators to identify schools that are getting the "best bang for the buck" when it comes to spending and student performance.

Westlake Academy received the highest rating of five stars for having very low spending per student and very high academic results.  TXSmartSchools.org is built on the foundational work of the Financial Allocation Study for Texas (FAST) launched by Susan Combs during her tenure as Texas Comptroller. Now housed at Texans for Positive Economic Policy and administered by Texas A&M University in College Station, this online resource empowers school districts to benchmark themselves against their peers and enables parents to assess the quality of education their children are receiving compared to its cost. The goal is to improve education by identifying Smart Schools that are both effective and efficient, and then highlight their successful practices.

Westlake's Popular Annual Financial Report (PAFR) is on the way to you...

Each year the Westlake Finance department prepares an annual Popular Annual Financial Report (PAFR) after the conclusion of the Town's yearly independent audit. This report has historically been available online through our Town's website but with our continued efforts to ensure all residents fully understand their town's finances, we will be mailing this year's report out to each home in Westlake.

The PAFR (for fiscal year ended Sept. 30, 2015) should arrive in your mailbox around July 1, 2016.  It is designed to provide a summary view of our financial activities. Please know that all information in this report can be found in greater detail in the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR), also found on the Town's website.  Should you have any questions or concerns regarding Westlake finances, please contact Finance Director Debbie Piper via email or at 817-490-5712.
Traveling? Here are a few safety tips and reminders ...

It's summer! Regardless of where you go for relaxation, chances are that you'll pack smartphones and tablets so you can connect to Wi-Fi to find local hotspots, navigate new cities and countries, and share photos of trips with family and friends.

Public Wi-Fi networks make it easy for anyone to connect to the Internet no matter where they are. These networks can be very convenient and offer many benefits for travelers, however, they do come with risks. Many public Wi-Fi networks are not secure, exposing you to online risks and presenting an opportunity for attackers to steal sensitive information.  For tips on how to stay safe while on the go, visit: Stop.Think.Connect.org.

*Before you leave, take a look at the Helpful Home Security Tips & Safety Checklist and don't forget about our police department's Free Vacation House Watch Service while you are away!
Stay proactive as mosquito season gears up

Even though temperatures are rising and pools of water are drying up, lets remain proactive and continue to "fight the bite" by practicing the four Ds - Dusk/Dawn, Dress, Deet, Drain!  Don't forget to check all areas around your home for standing water. If you can't drain it, stop by Town Hall and pick up some free mosquito dunks today!

Zika Virus update: So far, Texas has 47 reported cases of the Zika virus disease, four in Tarrant County and two in Denton County. More information about Zika can be found at
www.texaszika.org.

West Nile Virus update: Tarrant County Public Health is reporting at least 10 pools have tested positive for West Nile Virus.  Thankfully no reports of human cases so far.  New this year,  Denton County Public Health has a new mosquito surveillance tool  to use for keeping up with areas where positive samples are collected.
Animal Registration Reminder

As you may be aware, Westlake now requires dogs and cats to be registered. It's FREE! And if you take care of it this month, your pet will be registered in a drawing for gift card at Three Dog Bakery in Southlake!

Just stop by Westlake Town Hall or go to  Town's website for instructions on faxing or scanning the forms. You will need  a copy of your animal's latest rabies vaccination paperwork. Stay tuned for more info about a family fun pet event coming to Westlake later this year!
