In order to keep you informed about important issues in your community, Westar Energy will be initiating another phase of work improving/upgrading transmission lines in the northeast section of the City.  These improvements are a part of a continued effort to improve service delivery and help reduce/eliminate electrical outages.

The transmission line work will be done along 17th Street from Oliver to Woodlawn and Woodlawn to Rock Road.  Westar, through agreement with the City, will be moving their easement approximately 10 feet to the south along the Redbud Trail. City staff have met to discuss what trees will be impacted as a result of this move.  It has been determined that a small number of low value volunteer trees (Red Cedar and Siberian Elm) may either be trimmed or removed during this process. The alternative plan considered increases the easement to the North which would severely impact a great number of trees and negatively affect most adjacent private properties.

WESTAR ENERGY: WICHITA TRANSMISSION UPDATE (JUNE 2016)

As Wichita State University and the surrounding communities grow, their need for energy grows. Westar Energy has identified transmission projects that are needed to ensure the campus, surrounding neighbors, and all of Wichita has plenty of reliable electricity. The line being upgraded along 17th street will improve service to the university and surrounding area.

New power line standards require Westar to utilize wider easements than when the line was originally built, so Westar is purchasing nine homes on 17th near Oliver. Six of the homes are ready for demolition, pending a historical review by the city. These homes are slated for removal later this month.  The remaining three homes are still in the process of being acquired. Once the homes are removed, entry drives and driveways will also be removed. We will plant grass and fix any curbs, sidewalks and gutters along the roadway to match the existing curb and gutter.

Residents may observe contractors who are "potholing," which allows us to ensure we know where underground utilities are in the area and don't interrupt service. Construction of the transmission line is scheduled to begin in January and is scheduled to be in service in June 2017.
Mayor Jeff Longwell recently  announced that Wichita has been selected as 1 of 12 new cities to participate in Bloomberg Philanthropies' What Work Cities initiative - one of the largest-ever philanthropic efforts to enhance the use of data and evidence in the public sector.

Launched in April 2015, the initiative is now providing support to 39 cities in 25 states and will work with up to 100 mid-sized cities on a rolling basis through 2018.

Specific goals include establishing and improving open data practices in order
to make the city's data more accessible to the public, engage residents around government priorities and services, and increase transparency.

HealthCore Clinic, Inc. Expansion
HealthCore Clinic, Inc. announced that they have received funding from The Primary Care Development Corporation (PCDC) and Capital One Bank to complete a $10.7 million expansion and renovation of its existing facility, offering an expanded range of affordable, integrated health services to people of all ages. The package includes $9.0 million in New Markets Tax Credits (NMTC) provided by PCDC, $1.0 million of NMTC provided by Capital One, and loans totaling $5.6 million provided by PCDC and participating lender Local Initiatives Support Community (LISC).

Imagine a community suffering silently in the midst of a thriving Midwestern city. This community is restricted by invisible boundaries and carrying the burden of inequitable disparities in health outcomes, employment, education, income, crime, child removals from the home, etc. Access to opportunities to improve many of these disproportionalities was unavailable and/or lacked coordination... UNTIL NOW....

With the support of PCDC, LISC, Capital One, Capital Peak Partners, Architectural Innovations LLC, and JACO General Contractors, HealthCore Clinic will create a new "state of the art" health complex that will serve as a viable solution to integrate quality comprehensive medical services and coordinate community-based services to help empower the targeted community.

The new 40,000 square foot facility will revitalize a portion of the city that has not seen much economic investment. The new facility will include 33 exam rooms; 11 mental health rooms integrated throughout the clinic; a 7 chair dental clinic; a 340B pharmacy; Medical-Legal Partnership area; future space for optometry; a demonstration kitchen; physical fitness room; an education center; research area for current partnerships with both the University of Kansas Medical School and Wichita State University; a Community Collaboration Center that will provide space for community-based organizations that service the targeted population; a walking path around the new facility; and a community garden.

The new facility, which was designed by Architectural Innovations LLC, will be completed by JACO General Contractors in July 2017. HealthCore estimates that they will accommodate more than 30,000 additional patient visits over the next 7 years, more than tripling the health center's capacity.

"Our community is blessed to have PCDC, LISC, Capital One Bank, Capital Peak Partners, Architectural Innovations, and JACO General Contractors working with us on this heartfelt project," said Teresa Lovelady, President & CEO, HealthCore Clinic. "HealthCore's mission is to promote a healthy community with an emphasis on education and prevention. With our new expanded facility, we will improve the overall health outcomes of the community by offering access to quality integrated healthcare services regardless of a patient's insurance status or ability to pay for services."

"HealthCore Clinic serves a very important role within its community, as a provider of comprehensive preventative13, physical and mental health services and education," said Anne Dyjak, PCDC Managing Director. "PCDC is proud to be able to provide much-needed financing for this project, which will allow HealthCore to deliver high quality, affordable integrated services to more individuals and families in the community."

"This new, state-of-the-art facility serves our community in a variety of important ways," says Wichita Vice Mayor Lavonta Williams. "This building will help infuse this area with new development and job opportunities, which is proven to lower blight and crime rates. It will also help the population it serves have easier access to healthcare and wellness education, which can help improve the quality of life of countless individuals."

HealthCore is a federally qualified health center that provides critical family medical services in a predominantly underserved community of Wichita, KS. The clinic's typical patients are individuals living below 100 percent of the federal poverty level, nearly 40 percent of whom are uninsured. To help better serve its community, HealthCore offers multiple prevention programs that address the community's challenges, such as Strengthening Families, which serves at risk youth and families; and Baby Talk, which aims to reduce Wichita's high infant mortality rate. HealthCore's Refugee Support Project provides care to the more than 1,000 refugees many from the Democratic Republic of Congo living in the area.

WALKING REDUCES THE RISK OF DIABETES

Adults with diabetes who walk at least a mile per day are half as likely to die as those who are inactive. Walking improves blood-sugar levels.  And the best part is that WALKING IS FREE!

The best way to start walking is...to begin.  Place it high on your priority list.  If you plan to do it "when everything else is done" you will never start because there is always something more to do. Set a specific time to walk. Find a way to make it fun. Do you have a friend you could walk with? Do you have a dog?  Your vet would agree that your dog needs to walk also!       Does your neighborhood have a park where you could walk?  Maybe you prefer to listen to music or a book on tape.  Doesn't matter how you do it...just walk!

Aim for 30 minutes per day, 5 days per week.  But if you can't walk that long, start at 10-15 minutes.  That will help you as well.  Then try to increase your time.

The KanCare Volunteer Ombudsman Project
is looking for you!
The project, launched in November 2015, was developed to give Kansans a customer service oriented experience when seeking help in accessing Kansas Medicaid information and access.  Through training, shadowing, and direct experience with consumers both on the phone and in person, the Volunteer Ombudsman Project has served hundreds of Kansans since its start in November.  In these difficult times, the Ombudsman program looks to lend a personal approach to those in need of information.
  • Training is Free:  we will work around your schedule and we provide continuing education to make sure volunteers are up to date as things in the world of Medicaid changes.
  • Schedules are flexible: we ask for 3-10 hours weekly, but this can be tailored to fit any need.  Only have 2 hours?  No problem!  Want to work 16 hours?  No problem!
  • Volunteers are needed in Wichita, Olathe, and Kansas City
  • Application and background checks are required.
  • Face to face meetings are by appointment as well- great for direct consumer experience!

One in seven Kansans are affected by Medicaid- that number is consistently growing.  With all of our neighbors seeking help they need, the Ombudsman's office volunteers have a unique opportunity to directly affect the lives of various Kansas populations.  Contact Percy Turner at 316 978 3566 for more details.
