Travel Grants Available

Just for Students
We are excited to announce that the JFSP TREE Student Travel Grants have been extended for another year.
You can apply for a TREE grant here.
The deadline to apply is September 30.
For everyone else
Travel grants will come from the Southwest Fire Science Consortium and Association for Fire Ecology. All non-students are eligible to apply. If you are approved, your allowed travel expenses will be reimbursed after the conference.

AFE AWARD Nominations
|
Event registration includes attendance at AFE's Awards Banquet Luncheon on Wednesday, where we will give out the following awards:
Biswell Lifetime Achievement Award:
AFE strives to honor career achievement in fire ecology and management by recognizing the pioneers and early advocates in our field.
Our Lifetime Achievement Awards are presented to individuals who have made a significant contribution to fire ecology and management in the United States, and who have inspired and mentored a generation of fire ecologists. Their contributions may be in research, management, teaching, service, outreach, or a combination of these areas.
At this event, AFE's will be awarding the Biswell award. This award is given to individuals whose primary work environment was in the western United States, and is named after Harold Biswell, longtime faculty member at the University of California-Berkeley.
SAFE Graduate and Undergraduate Student Excellence Awards:
AFE presents two awards to students each year, the Edward Komarek, Sr. Graduate Student Excellence Award and the Harold Weaver Undergraduate Student Excellence Award. These awards are given to students who are active members of recognized SAFE chapters and who demonstrate superior academic achievement and involvement in fire related research and activities.

About this event:
As part of the Southwest conference this year, we are holding a concurrent Applied Fire Science Workshop track that will include
Roundtable Discussions
designed to identify communication issues that occur during wildfires, to understand and appreciate varied perspectives, and to brainstorm scenarios where good communication enables managers to meet resource objectives more readily. Socioeconomic implications of fire will also be a large part of the conference. We will have

Geography & Region:
The larger conference will allow for presentation of new science from researchers and land managers from fire-adapted ecosystems throughout the greater Southwest Borderlands Region (eg: Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, western Oklahoma, western Texas, Utah and northern Mexico). Ecosystems of interest include deserts, grasslands, riparian and wetlands, chaparral, pinyon-juniper, and mixed conifer.
Participants:
This event will engage researchers, decision makers, and practitioners in friendly roundtable discussions on key issues, informed by scientific and practitioner talks and panel debates. An important objective is for participants to become acquainted with emerging initiatives and partnering opportunities that can enhance their fire community capabilities.
Sponsor this Event:
Sponsorship opportunities are available for support from government agencies, institutions, and businesses, ranging from $1,000 to $15,000 and higher. Support of this important regional conference will be used to cover conference organizing and logistics, and help us keep registration fees low. Lower fees will help broaden participation by federal, state, and local government employees, educators, students, and other interested citizens.
