Business of Ice Hockey Report
Now Available

The Annual Business of Ice Hockey is a great resource of information on participation and sales data in the United States. The 2016 Edition of the report is now available!

Overall participation in the U.S. declined slightly for the second consecutive year. Overall sales for the categories of hockey and ice skates also decreased from 2014 to 2015.

In 2015, it was  a very warm year across the country, which likely influenced the slightly lower participation and sales figures.

Members of the Hockey Dealers Association, and National Sporting Goods Association members with an interest in hockey, will receive a free electronic copy of the report. Printed copies of the report are available to members upon request.

The cost of the report is $395 for non-members. Purchasing a one-year membership in HDA for $125 is a great way to not only receive the Annual Business of Ice Hockey report, but also to keep up with news and information on the industry and to utilize various cost-saving services.

Youth Player and Dad Use ASTM
to Help Protect Throats of Goalies

Jerry Ostrander figured something needed to be done after the throat protector on the goalie's mask of his then 14-year-old A.J. was shattered by a puck for the fourth time. Ostrander, a retired police officer, did not feel the kids were being protected and eventually took the issue to ASTM International.

Ostrander found there was no safety standard at ASTM or any other governing body for throat protectors. But with some help he began to develop a standard and started going to ASTM meetings with his son.

As a result, the ASTM approved a standard on March 15: F3165, Specification for Throat Protective Equipment for Hockey Goaltenders. The Hockey Equipment Certification Council (HECC) is expected to use the new standard and it may be adopted by other organizations.

PSG Says Two Studies Validate
Concussion Collar Technology

Performance Sports Group said proprietary technology licensed exclusively to the company for use in sports and athletic activities has been shown to reduce brain injury biomarkers in two separately published peer-review studies.

The studies used high school hockey and football players with a C-shaped neck collar, developed by Q30 Innovations, that attempts to reduce mild traumatic brain injury by using the body's internal physiology instead of external protections such as helmets. The device mildly increases blood volume in the cranium, trying to reduce the "slosh effect," which medical experts have identified as a key cause of mild traumatic brain injury.

PSG announced its anticipated launch of the product in the spring/summer of 2017. PSG will then proceed on making the product available in the U.S. and other countries after it receives approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and other regulatory authorities across the world.

Families Turning to RVs
for Travel Tournaments

Travel hockey requires a significant commitment. A small but rising number of families are turning to RVs to cut hotel costs and make the experience more enjoyable, according to a story in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Some families believe using RVs allows players to get more rest, avoid boredom from being in hotel rooms and build more family and player camaraderie.

FAREWELL TO MR. HOCKEY

Gordie Howe (1928-2016)

The hockey world lost one of its legends with the passing of Gordie Howe on June 10 at the age of 88. Howe spent the bulk of his professional career with the Detroit Red Wings and held NHL records for goals (801) and points (1,850) that stood until they were broken by Wayne Gretzky. Howe also had 174 goals and 508 points in six seasons in the old World Hockey Association and finished his career at age 51 with the Hartford Whalers.

Howe did more for hockey than just put up impressive numbers and display incredible longevity. He also was a tremendous ambassador renowned for never turning down an autograph. Gretzky told ESPN.com he would like to see the NHL pay tribute to Howe by having his uniform No. 9 retired throughout the league.

"I'm pretty biased," said Gretzky, who wore No. 99 in tribute to Howe. "If I had my way, I would do it. But that's for the league. I'm not involved with the league right now. But listen, whatever they choose to do is going to be very special because Gordie deserves something really special and unique.

"I don't think anybody helped promote, support the game, the sport or our country better than Gordie Howe. He was proud to be a Canadian, proud to be from Saskatchewan. And I don't think the NHL is going to overlook the fact of how important he was to the game, so I'm sure they are going to do something real special for him."
