article1Local Donors Help Students Achieve Their Dreams of Higher Education

This year $624,650 was awarded in college scholarships to local residents for the 2016-2017 academic year. Awards were given to 391 students who are beginning or continuing their college educations. Recipients throughout Worcester County were selected through a highly competitive process on the basis of merit, financial need and special criteria established by the Foundation's donors.

More than 167 volunteers on 60 selection committees awarded the scholarships, the highest number of awards and annual scholarship payout in the history of the Foundation.

a4The Foundation Address Summer Learning Loss 

Overcoming the "summer slide" is hard enough for kids from privileged households, but students from low-income families have historically been devastated by the break in schooling.

We are currently investing in three specific areas: assuring more access to  high quality early care ,  supporting families in their roles as teachers, caregivers, and supporters of their children's development, and helping eliminate  summer learning loss. It's a whole-community challenge with big payoffs for all of us.

Our annual NSC Summer Social is taking place on Wednesday, July 13 at Joy of Music Program (JOMP). This event is for our region's nonprofit leaders and funders.

Together, we'll create a fund that reflects your philanthropic and financial goals through an easy, effective process covering everything from donor education to fund administration. 

With a $10,000 gift, you can create your own charitable fund with Greater Worcester Community Foundation. Establish your fund in your name or the name of your family-or let its name honor a cherished person, group or cause. All grants from your fund will carry its name, now and in the future.

a5Leadership in Action 

Every May we hold our Annual Meeting as a way to highlight some the Foundation's achievements over the previous year. In 2015 alone, we distributed $5.7 million in grants and scholarships, started 17 new funds, and received over $6 million in gifts. 

Today, we continue to grow by applying our shared community wisdom to build new partnerships, create strategic initiatives and target more resources to those who need it most. These investments support the Foundation's multiple, interrelated goals to foster a citizenry with the basics to participate more fully in their community-- economic security, proper housing, quality health care, and a sound education, particularly for the youngest among us. We feel through these initiatives, and our community leadership in action, together we'll go far.

a2Grantee Connection: Supporting Centers for Early Education and Care

Worcester Comprehensive Education and Care is one of the grantees to receive a grant through the Foundation's Early Childhood Grant cycle .  The WCEC offers early education and care services to families with children from age 4 weeks to 13 years old. Check out the video below to see how they're making a difference Worcester County.
