Pia Mellody on Self-Esteem

The Dating and Relationship Group

In the last meeting of the Dating and Relationship Group, we began to explore the work of Pia Mellody, a nationally-recognized expert on co-dependence and love addiction.  For our next meeting on Saturday, April 19, I would like to present Mellody's perspective on self-esteem.  Throughout her work, Mellody argues that due to conflict and distress in our families of origin, many of us are left with an illusion of self-value that leaves us vulnerable to shame, chaotic emotional states, and dysfunctional relationships.  In a compelling presentation, Mellody discusses various forms of damaged personal worth and how they are manifested in a value-power-abundance framework.  This framework is perhaps one of the most pragmatically useful models of psychological health I have encountered.  If you plan to attend on Saturday, please try to view Mellody's presentation beforehand.

Men on Strike

"Men on Strike": The Work of Helen Smith, Ph.D.

The Men's Group

The psychologist Helen Smith has written a provocative book entitled, "Men on Strike: Why Men are Boycotting Marriage, Fatherhood, and the American Dream - and Why It Matters."  Published in 2013, the book has generated a lot of attention.  Smith argues that men are avoiding what traditionally has been expected of them for a variety of reasons, including a lack of incentive and both direct and indirect anti-male sentiment that has been gradually emerging for decades since the emergence of feminism. Smith essentially claims that men are getting a bad rap and are progressively adapting a "learned helplessness" approach to societal changes turning against them.  In the next meeting of the Men's Group on Saturday, April 19, I will present Smith's major contentions and am certain they will generate a lot of opinions and reactions from those men in attendance. To acquaint yourself with Smith's ideas, please view the following: video 1, video 2, video 3, and video 4.
