MABLETON IMPROVEMENT COALITION

NEWSLETTER

November 15, 2014

From the President...

November has been a whirlwind, with the threatened demolition of the Hooper-Turner House, the progress of the Neighborhood Watch program in Historic Mableton, and our Community Meeting last week.  At the same time, MIC is gearing up for our holiday projects - volunteering at Mable's Tea Room with the South Cobb Arts Alliance and our Secret Santa Program with the Boys & Girls Club.  There is more information about all this work in the articles below.

As you read through them, take a minute to consider how you can reach out to your community and make a difference - large or small.  Whether it's a conversation with a new neighbor or a call to a nonprofit in need of volunteers, actions like these create community.

I hope to see you over this holiday season.  In the meanwhile, please feel free to call or email.  I'm always ready to talk about Mableton!

Sincerely,

Preservation Plan for River Line is Finished
Preservation Plan Available

MIC is proud to announce that the Preservation Plan for the Chattahoochee River Line is finished!  Click here to read the Plan!   CRL trench

For the first time, in one document, we have a road map for the development and use of the 127 acres of County park property along Nickajack Creek and the Chattahoochee River in the eastern part of Mableton. For this property and other parts of the battlefield in Smyrna and Vinings, the Plan has recommendations on property acquisition, interpretation and how the public can use and enjoy these historic and recreational assets.

With the passage of the 2016 SPLOST, $1 million will be available to begin work on the Discovery Tract.  MIC's Parks Committee will keep you posted on the progress.  If you are interested in being involved in this work, please contact Robin Meyer.

Hooper-Turner House Update
Cobb County Historic Preservation Commission Meeting

A meeting was held, Monday, November 10 with the Cobb County Historic Preservation Commission regarding recommending preservation for the Hooper-Turner House. A concerned community group of over 40 were in attendance to show their support for preservation for the house. Many concerned residents of both Mableton and Smyrna spoke rallying for the house to be spared from planned demolition.

The Hooper-Turner House is located in Cobb County District 4 and Heather HT House Culligan, Commissioner Cupid's appointee, shared her research about the house and supported its preservation. The Commission Chair informed all in attendance that their comments would be forwarded to the City of Smyrna. The Commission's recommendation for preservation cannot supersede the City of Smyrna's authority to demolish the house, so the house is still in jeopardy of being torn down.

At this time, a private buyer seems the only viable solution for the house and land to stay in existence as a historical place in our community. If anyone has suggestions or recommendations regarding a private buyer for the home, please contact Meggan Delano at [email protected].

Be a Secret Santa for the Boys & Girls Club
Annual MIC Holiday Project
Each year, MIC partners with the A.W. "Tony" Mathews Boys and Girls Club in Mableton to provide Christmas gifts for the children at our local club.  The Secret Santa program helps more than 50 children with their Christmas wishes each holiday season.

MIC members and friends who participate will receive the child's wish list, including favorite toys, clothing sizes and other needs. It is suggested that each sponsor spend approximately $50 per child. If you want to spend more, you can be a Secret Santa for more than one child.

If you would like to be a Secret Santa, please email Janis Stevenson.  We are grateful for the community support in years past and look forward to hearing from you again.

MIC Volunteers at Mable's Tea Room
Friday and Saturday, December 5th and 6th
For the last several years, MIC volunteers have "adopted" Mable's Tea Room, providing Tea Room volunteers and homemade cakes and soups for this wonderful Mableton tradition.  In return, the South Cobb Arts Alliance, which sponsors the event, makes a donation to MIC.  The Tea Room has become an important fundraiser for MIC as well as a chance to serve our friends and neighbors.

Many of our volunteers from last year will be returning, but we do have some volunteer spaces left - and we can always use more cakes and soups, which count towards MIC's fundraising goals.  Email J.R. White to volunteer or for more information.  Volunteering is a lot of fun, so come join us!

The Mommy & Me Teas will be held on Sunday, December 7th at noon and 2:30pm. Children and their mothers, aunts, grandmothers and special friends enjoy a light lunch served by their favorite Princesses!  Tables seat 4, 6 or 8 and range from $40 to $80. Reservations are required; call 770 819-3265.
