Self-Disclosure

Self-disclosure is a crucial factor in all relationships, yet seldom do we reflect on the process of sharing to our partners, friends, family members and co-workers, the decision-making that goes into deeper levels of communication, and the mode, timing, and risks/benefits of divulging personal material.  It turns out that there is a large and intriguing psychological literature on self-disclosure.  In the next meeting of the Dating and Relationship Group on Saturday, July 19, I will present an interesting article on self-disclosure that will serve as a launching point for our discussion.

Daniel Siegel on Mindfulness and "Flipping Your Lid"

Daniel Siegel, a leading psychiatrist and founder of the Interpersonal Neurobiology movement, emphasizes the role of the brain in modulating emotions and impacting the quality of interpersonal relationships.  His ideas will be the focus of the next meeting of the Men's Group on Saturday, July 19.  If you plan to attend, please take a look at the following two videos.  In the first, Siegel presents his conceptualization of different operating systems in the brain and the ways in which mindfulness affects these systems.  In the second, he explains how anger and dysregulated emotion evolve, the brakes and accelerator of the brain, and the organic bases of attunement to others, empathy, and compassion.  Siegel's work is highly relevant for men and the challenges men face.

If you plan to attend on Saturday, July 19, 2014, please RSVP to Dr. Tobin at 949-338-4388 or [email protected] no later than Thursday, July 17.  The Men's Group will meet at 10:45 AM to 12:00 PM noon, and the Dating and Relationship Group at 12:00 PM to 1:15 PM.  The fee is $25.00, and there is a limit of 12 people for each group.  The location is The Water Garden Business Center, 23421 South Pointe Drive, Suite 130, Laguna Hills, CA, 92653.
