Make a Difference in a Child's
Life This Summer

Each summer The Brotherhood/Sister Sol (Bro/Sis) provides an array of experiences for our members. Without Bro/Sis our young people would not have engaging and stimulating opportunities that provide essentials support in their lives. All children should have access to these growth opportunities.  All children.  Poverty should not be a barrier.

On June 4th, The New York Times published an article, which stated:

"In summer, the lack of affordable child care and the achievement gap collide for lower income families. Most kids lose math skills over the summer, but low-income children also lose, on average, more than two months of reading skills - and they don't gain them back. That puts them nearly three years behind higher income peers by the end of fifth grade, and the gap just keeps getting wider. Researchers credit the summer slide for about half of the overall difference in academic achievement between lower and higher income students."

This speaks directly to the work of Bro/Sis and proves why our summer programming is so critical.  We work to ensure that our children do not lose skills over the summer and that the dreaded access and achievement gap is bridged.

Summer at Bro/Sis

During the summer, we provide over 500 meals to our members and keep them intellectually stimulated, using NYC as a living playground. We engage them in an interwoven set of programs that incorporates: the arts, gardening and environmental education, sports and wellness, cultural enrichment and exposure, job skills, internships and opportunities.
This summer our young people will:
  • Attend world-class summer day camps where they are enriched and develop a strong sense of self and agency.
  • Be exposed to an array of employment fields and meet with professionals from diverse sectors as they expand their horizons.
  • Explore Cuba for a month and learn more about this unique and complicated country.
  • Continue their year-round work to create and develop a community garden and sustainability center while bringing over 30,000 pounds of food to the local community via our youth-run farmers market.
  • Continue the college preparation process through intensive college guidance and exposure.
