Waterford Heritage Craft School

The Waterford Foundation is striving to preserve heritage crafts such as quilting, weaving, pottery, furniture-making, basket weaving, and blacksmithing by educating the next generation of artisans. In this new initiative, the Foundation will be hosting weekend craft classes in Waterford as part of the Waterford Heritage Craft School. Classes in building arts will also be included, such as traditional construction methods, old and historic building restoration, and adaptive reuse. The first such weekend is planned for August 19-21, 2016. Classes will include 10 hours of instruction over three days (Friday-Sunday), and course material will be appropriate for adults and mature teenagers.

Strategic Plan Stakeholder Survey

Thank you to those who participated in our Stakeholder Survey, which sought your input into our strategic planning process. We received over 250 responses! Please visit our website at wwww.waterfordfoundation.org if you're interested in seeing the results.

We plan to share our progress during a community potluck on September 10, 2016 in the Old School Auditorium. Please mark your
calendars and make plans to join us.

Second Street School

This spring the one-room schoolhouse played host to 34 classes of area 4 th graders who participated in the Second Street School Living History Program. Many thanks to our dedicated volunteers who portray Miss Nickens!

We are always looking for additional dedicated volunteers. If you are interested in joining the Education and Collections Committee, or if you would be interested in becoming a Miss Nickens volunteer at the Second Street School, please contact Judy Jackson ([email protected] or 540-822-3518).

Welcome Tracy Kirkman, Our New Fair Director!

We are pleased to welcome Tracy Kirkman as our new Fair Director. Most recently, she worked with the Virginia Vineyards Association as their Business Manager.

We are confident that she will bring a great deal of energy to the position.

In addition to her event planning, social media skills, and marketing experience, Tracy has experience with artisanal food production and has lots of creative ideas for the Schooley Mill Barn area, in particular!

I hope you'll stop in and introduce yourselves, and make her feel welcome.

A Knox Box was installed outside the Old School entrance, which contains keys to all Foundation buildings so the Fire Dept. can access buildings without breaking down doors.

Volunteer Opportunities

Help us get the taps flowing in October!

Have a passion for beer? Know your lagers from your pilsners? We are looking for you to chair the beer garden for the Fair. This would be a great project to take on with a partner/co-chair.

Legends by Lanternlight : Tales of War & Peace, 1859-67

July 23rd--7:30 p.m.

Join us for a twilight walking tour ending by lantern light through the streets of historic Waterford with costumed interpretations by the Mosby Heritage Area Interpretive Group (GGIG). They will examine the Underground Railroad, divisive Civil War, and the time of change that followed. Wear good walking shoes. A fundraiser for the Waterford Foundation-partnering with the Mosby Heritage Area Association. Learn how our preserved historic landscape still tells us stories. Refreshments follow.

Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre - Scared to Death

Archaeology Camp August 1 - 5

The Waterford Foundation joins with Loudoun Archaeology Foundation to bring you our third year of Archaeology Camp right in the village of Waterford. Rising 3 rd through 6 th graders can become Junior Archaeologists alongside Dr. Digs and discover all sorts of secrets from our past while having fun doing so.

Only 15 young archaeologists can participate. There are a few openings left.

Old School Cleanup Day

A dozen Foundation volunteers banded together to give the Old School a thorough Spring cleaning. Board members Bill McGuire and Peggy Bednarik provided the elbow grease to make the kitchen shine!

Loudoun Laurels to Margaret Morton

Congratulations to our very own Margaret Morton for being named one of the two 2016 Loudoun Laureates. An active preservationist, Margaret, who served on Loudoun County's first Historic District Review Board, has been a long-time supporter of the Foundation, along with her husband, Brown.

The 2016 honorees will be feted at the Loudoun Laurels Gala, Sept. 30 at Belmont Country Club in Ashburn.
