Today, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) published a notice in the Federal Register of their intent to establish a Tribal Intergovernmental Advisory Committee.  This committee will assist HUD in further developing and maintaining its Indian housing programs.  HUD Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public and Indian Housing, Lourdes Castro Ramirez covered this development while addressing the NAIHC/AMERIND Annual Meeting and Trade Fair last month in Honolulu, HI.

The National American Indian Housing Council (NAIHC) has advocated for HUD to follow their Tribal Consultation Policy.  NAIHC has also advocated for the establishment and support of Tribal Advisory Committees.  This will increase consultation and collaboration with tribal governments on a regular basis when policies, programs, or actions have tribal implications.  NAIHC membership believes there remains a need for enhanced communication and coordination between HUD and federally recognized Indian tribes.  It is critical to solicit advice and recommendations, involving tribes in decision-making and policy development on a regular basis.

Today's Federal Register contains a typo in the due date for comments for the proposal as June 23, 2016.  HUD officials are working on an updated notice that shall include a 30-day comment period.  NAIHC will provide any new information as it becomes available.

Also in today's Federal Register, HUD published a final Government-to-Government Consultation Policy. The purpose of this tribal consultation policy is to enhance communication and coordination between HUD and federally recognized Indian tribes and to outline guiding principles and procedures under which all HUD employees are to operate with regard to federally recognized Indian or Alaska Native tribes.
