What's Happening at TOPS Veterinary Rehab
A case example of physical rehabilitation in a dog after stifle surgery
For this month's newsletter we are circling back to an article authored by Dr. Christine Jurek and Dr. Laurie McCauley sharing a case study of rehabilitation following stifle surgery. Here is an excerpt of that case study, and a link to the entire article on DVM360 at the bottom.

Bella, a 1-year-old spayed female Labrador retriever, was presented for rehabilitation therapy after bilateral anterior cruciate ligament rupture and subsequent extracapsular repair of both stifles. Featured Case (Part 1):  "Nico"
Case Study:  Nico

N ico is a one year old, neutered male Miniature Australian Shepherd. In early December, Nico suffered
a traumatic injury (hit by car). Nico spent his first 15 days at the Wisconsin Veterinary Referral Center.   Upon presentation at the ER his major issues included: abdominal hernia, bilateral pelvic ilial fractures, pulmonary contusions, anemia, paraparesis, pneumothorax, azotemia, head trauma, coagulopathy, and hematuria.

Following the acute management of the accident, Nico underwent two surgeries, one to repair the abdominal hernia and one to surgically repair (plate) both fractures.  Nico was also not eating on his own, and as a result a feeding tube was inserted.

Upon stabilizing from these issues, Nico was transferred to TOPS for further management.  At this point, many of the above issues had been resolved or were under control.  However, Nico was still requiring a feeding tube, was still paraparetic, and was also urinary and fecally incontinent. Following his rehab evaluation, Dr. Jones recommended, and the clients agreed to, the following treatment plan:  acupuncture, laser therapy, massage, passive range of motion exercises, AssisiĀ® targeted electromagnetic field therapy, and underwater treadmill therapy once walking had been initiated.

Nico is currently still under our rehabilitation care, and is doing very well.  We are very encouraged by his progress, and remain positive about his prognosis.  February's Newsletter will have an update as to his progress, so stay tuned!
