Entergy New Orleans Proposes New Power Plant to Meet City's Growing Needs

Local plant will serve New Orleans during periods of peak demand and unplanned events

NEW ORLEANS - As part of long-term planning to ensure that Entergy New Orleans, Inc. can continue to serve the city's energy and capacity needs, the company today filed an application with the New Orleans City Council seeking its approval to build the New Orleans Power Station - a new, modern power plant - at its existing Michoud site in an industrial area on the eastern edge of New Orleans.

The company has requested council approval by Jan. 31, 2017. If approved, the New Orleans Power Station is expected to be placed into service in the second half of 2019.

This request follows the June 1, 2016 deactivations of the 1960s-era Michoud units 2 and 3, which were driven by economic decisions based on maintenance and operational issues, and will provide a long-term local resource to meet the city's particular resource needs at the lowest reasonable cost to customers.

The natural gas-fired combustion turbine plant - commonly known as a CT plant - will increase the load-serving capability in New Orleans, increase operational flexibility, increase reactive power and aid in restoration efforts following major weather events.

"Through the council's integrated resource plan - or IRP - process, we take future power demand into account as well as all feasible existing and potential resources available to safely, reliably and affordably serve our customers," said Charles Rice, president and CEO of Entergy New Orleans. "Building the New Orleans Power Station will improve power supply conditions in the city and, along with our other resources, will allow us to serve New Orleans during periods of peak demand and unplanned events."

Entergy New Orleans filed its IRP report with the council on Feb. 1, 2016. That filing came after numerous public meetings and over 18 months of input from stakeholders representing a wide range of viewpoints. The plan's preferred portfolio reflects a balanced and reasonable way to meet customers' needs over the next two decades. The IRP process is ongoing and the council is expected to consider Entergy New Orleans' IRP later this year.

"A consistent theme among stakeholders who participated and provided input in the process was a strong desire that we do more to incorporate renewables into our long-term plans - and we are continuing to look for economical ways to do so," said Rice. "For instance, we recently issued a request for proposals related to 20 megawatts of renewable generation, which will help us better determine the availability of economic utility-scale renewable generation for New Orleans."

In February 2016, Entergy New Orleans broke ground on the city's first utility-scale solar project that not only harnesses the power of the sun, but stores it as well. One of only a few like it in the United States, the 1 megawatt project will pilot the integration of utility-scale solar generation and state-of-the-art battery-storage technology while simultaneously establishing a benchmark for utility-scale solar generation performance in the metro New Orleans area.

And in March 2016, crews completed the second of a two-phase technological upgrade to New Orleans' electric power transmission system - a $30 million capital investment to enhance reliability, increase transmission capacity and help ensure the availability of affordable power now and into the future. The upgrade was required by the Midcontinent Independent System Operator, Inc. prior to the June 1 deactivation of Michoud units 2 and 3.

"We're committed to our customers and to powering life in this city," said Rice. "Just like those projects and our acquisition of the highly efficient Union Power Station Unit 1 this spring, we're confident that building the New Orleans Power Station is the right move at the right time. We've taken all factors into account and feel certain that it lays the foundation necessary to provide New Orleans with the power to grow."

Entergy New Orleans, Inc. is an electric and gas utility that serves Louisiana's Orleans Parish. The company provides electricity to more than 198,000 customers and natural gas to more than 106,000 customers. Entergy New Orleans is a subsidiary of Entergy Corporation.

Entergy Corporation is an integrated energy company engaged primarily in electric power production and retail distribution operations. Entergy owns and operates power plants with approximately 30,000 megawatts of electric generating capacity, including nearly 10,000 megawatts of nuclear power. Entergy delivers electricity to 2.8 million utility customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Entergy has annual revenues of approximately $11.5 billion and more than 13,000 employees.

FACT SHEET

What is a combustion turbine unit?
A combustion turbine (or CT) generating unit is used to supply power during peak demand periods when electricity use is high, and also can aid in the restoration process following a hurricane by providing a local source of generation. CT units start quickly and while they are mainly used short-term to meet temporary energy needs, they also are capable of operating for extended periods of time. The CT proposed by Entergy New Orleans, Inc. is also known as the New Orleans Power Station.

Where will the New Orleans Power Station be located?
It will be located in an industrial area on the eastern edge of New Orleans at the same company-owned site as the deactivated Michoud plant. This site was identified as optimal considering factors such as proximity to fuel supply, existing infrastructure, site suitability and that it provides more reliability than alternatives considered.

Why does New Orleans need the New Orleans Power Station?
Entergy New Orleans is committed to providing reliable and affordable energy for a growing city today and tomorrow. The technology chosen for the generation of that energy also must be reliable and affordable. The June 1, 2016 deactivations of the 1960s-era Michoud units 2 and 3, which were driven by economic decisions based on maintenance and operational issues, resulted in the loss of approximately 781 megawatts of local generating capacity. As a result, Entergy New Orleans has a need for overall capacity as well as a need for local peaking and reserve capacity resources here in Orleans Parish.

What are the benefits of the New Orleans Power Station?
The proposed plant will increase the generation needed to handle Entergy New Orleans' projected load and, as a local resource, it also will help the city in a number of ways. In addition to supporting economic development and providing economic benefits to the state and parish through revenues and jobs, it will aid in the restoration process should extreme weather conditions or a major storm strike our area.

What is the estimated cost and timeline?
The estimated cost of the New Orleans Power Station is $216 million and it is expected to be operational in the second half of 2019. Entergy New Orleans is seeking council approval of its request by Jan. 31, 2017.

What about public input?
As part of the IRP process, of which the proposed CT unit is a part, Entergy New Orleans hosted four primary and three interim public meetings as part of an ongoing commitment to seek broad stakeholder input and provide transparency in the development of the IRP. Moreover, Entergy New Orleans has made a filing with the council and has asked for a procedural schedule to be established to determine whether the New Orleans Power Station is in the public interest.

MAYOR LANDRIEU MARKS NEW ORLEANS' PROGRESS OVER LAST SIX YEARS
DURING ANNUAL STATE OF THE CITY ADDRESS

City releases five-year strategy to increase affordable housing
and four-year progress report on NOLA FOR LIFE

NEW ORLEANS - In his annual State of the City address today on the rooftop of The ReFresh Project overlooking Mid-City, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu marked the progress the city has made over the last six years in education, healthcare, job creation, transportation and infrastructure. He also announced a new five-year strategy to increase affordable housing in the city, hailed the four-year progress of the City's NOLA FOR LIFE comprehensive murder reduction strategy and encouraged residents to participate in the City's new #EquityNewOrleans initiative to drive systemic change that will ensure equity within City government at all levels.

"The state of our city is as strong as it has been in 60 years, and it is getting stronger," said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. "Now, we have a real chance to course-correct and fly. But we still have a long way to go and there are a whole host of issues on which we as a city must continue to seek higher common ground. Since taking office six years ago, we have shown the world what we can do and I am even more optimistic about our future. Our goal is to not just rebuild New Orleans the way she was, but how she was always meant to be. That means building a stronger, more resilient and equitable city where promise and opportunity are abundant for everyone. We cannot leave anyone behind.  We must all move forward together."

District A Councilmember Susan G. Guidry said, "The economic outlook of New Orleans has never been brighter, with hundreds of millions of dollars in new economic activity and investment bringing new jobs and rising property values. While the State may be in a fiscal crunch, New Orleans continues to be an economic dynamo. But with this good fortune comes responsibility. We, as a City, must make sure that all New Orleanians have the opportunity to be a part of our continued progress and prosperity."

Public safety remains our top priority
Upon taking office in 2010, Mayor Landrieu made public safety a top priority. Today, the New Orleans Police Department is implementing the most comprehensive police reform in American history. Once again, the NOPD is recruiting, training and growing its ranks. Police officers are being retrained for community policing and wearing body cameras and long troubled sections of NOPD have been reformed like the sex crimes. Through NOLA FOR LIFE, the City's comprehensive murder reduction strategy launched in 2011, New Orleans has reduced murder more than any other similar peer city. The Multi-Agency Gang Unit, led by NOPD and combining the resources of the Louisiana State Police, Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office, State Department of Corrections, Probation and Parole, U.S. Marshalls Service, DEA, ATF, FBI, the District Attorney and U.S. Attorney, has launched dozens of investigations leading to 118 gang or group member indictments. In 2011, 55 percent of New Orleans murders were gang or group related. That number has been cut in half today. This year, New Orleans is on track to have the lowest number of murders since 1971.

Economic future is bright
New Orleans economy is strong led by new jobs, improving schools and record number of visitors fueling the city's cultural economy. Retail growth has led to a 5% increase in sales tax collections, doubling the state. After closing a $100 million budget gap inherited upon taking office in 2010 and fixing the firefighters pension fund, S&P has upgraded the City's credit rating three times and is now A+, saving millions on lower interest rates.

Transformational projects are creating new jobs
Since taking office in 2010, 15,000 new jobs have been created which has helped spur on $6 billion in new construction across the city. Major economic drivers are on the way. Construction has begun on the new North Terminal at New Orleans Louis Armstrong International Airport which will create thousands of new jobs and provide 30 new gates, better parking, a new hotel and new ground transportation hub. Already, 10 million people come through the airport each year on 54 direct flights across 15 airlines. Last week, the City announced the first international flight to Europe with Condor Airlines. A second major jobs creator will be the redevelopment of the former World Trade Center building into a $364 million Four Seasons Hotel and Condominiums. It will create 1,600 construction jobs, 450 permanent jobs and feature aggressive DBE goals so everyone can take part in this once in a lifetime opportunity. The Port of New Orleans is also positioned to take advantage of increased trade with the widening of the Panama Canal and normalization of relations between the United States and Cuba. Since 2012, $100 million has been invested in the port, including the new Mississippi River Intermodal Terminal adding space for 2,000 more huge shipping containers that will create jobs and move goods faster.

Expanding the circle of opportunity
Mayor Landrieu addressed that residents and businesses must join the ongoing efforts to expand the circle of opportunity for all New Orleanians in order for our city to progress. That means jobs for the 52 percent of African-American men in New Orleans who are not working. STRIVE, the City's flagship job training program that is part of the Mayor Landrieu's Economic Opportunity Strategy, recently celebrated its eighth graduation. STRIVE creates pathways to prosperity through a crash course on everything professional. Combined with programs at local Opportunity Centers, STRIVE has connected 241 mostly African-American men to jobs and 80 percent are still working after 6 months.

New Orleans future begins in the classroom
Mayor Landrieu triumphed the success of the city's public schools led in part by $1.8 billion in FEMA funding for more than 30 new world class 21st century learning centers rebuilt since Hurricane Katrina. Today, graduation rates are up, drop-out rates are down and young African-American men are graduating at rates higher than both the state and national averages. This year, 2,200 seniors graduated, earning $80 million in scholarships for 315 different colleges and universities.

Breaking down barriers and building equity
To build off the City's success in murder reduction, economic opportunity and improving health outcomes for children and families, Mayor Landrieu launched a new citywide initiative called #EquityNewOrleans to drive systemic change within City government to ensure equity at all levels. With generous support from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, #EquityNewOrleans seeks to break down barriers that divide New Orleans residents from access to resources and opportunities due to economic, racial and geographic disparities.

A healthy workforce will power New Orleans growth
Mayor Landrieu also remarked that healthcare is a huge growth industry for New Orleans with the new University Medical Center and soon to be complete Veterans Administration Hospital. Together with the New Orleans East Hospital and network of neighborhood health centers, 140,000 people are served every year. These hospitals and clinics are creating thousands of jobs from x-ray techs and phlebotomists to doctors, nurses, and administrators. With the expansion of Medicaid, 35,000 New Orleanians already have access to care.

Rebuilding our infrastructure
Mayor Landrieu also noted important achievements in transportation and infrastructure. RTA will soon complete new streetcar along Rampart Street and St. Claude Avenue and bring online two new ferries to serve the East and Westbank which will spur significant investment. Since 2010, the City has completed 267 street projects, paved 122 miles of streets and filled over 270,000 potholes. The City negotiated a historic $2 billion lump sum streets settlement with FEMA. However, billions more will be needed to fix all of New Orleans aging roadways and subsurface infrastructure. Mayor Landrieu has asked the Fix My Streets Financing Working Group to develop a master plan for funding all interior street repairs over the next ten years. In order to have 'complete streets' that can accommodate cars, buses and streetcars, the City has more than 100 miles of dedicated bikeways resulting in nearly triple bike commuters across New Orleans.

Reimagining public housing and reducing blight
In recent years, more than $1 billion has been spent on affordable public housing in New Orleans including redevelopment of public housing projects into new mixed-income communities like Columbia Parc, Faubourg Lafitte, Marrero Commons, Harmony Oaks and Bienville Basin. These communities feature affordable apartments in much safer neighborhoods feature childhood education, community centers, pools, schools parks and playgrounds. Six years ago, New Orleans was the most blighted city in America. Mayor Landrieu launched an aggressive blight reduction strategy and today New Orleans has 15,000 fewer blighted addresses. Today, citywide property values are up 54 percent and the value of some homes have doubled or tripled meaning more money in homeowners' pockets and more generational wealth for New Orleans families.

Need for more affordable housing
As a consequence of New Orleans increasing population and job growth, rent has increased by 50 percent since 2000. Compounded by flat wages, many New Orleanians pay more than 50 percent of their income on housing costs. To ensure working people do not get priced out of New Orleans, today Mayor Landrieu announced a new five-year strategy to build more affordable housing in the City. In close collaboration with public and private stakeholders, the Housing for a Resilient New Orleans strategy will create or preserve another 4,000 affordable housing units for working people of New Orleans over the next two years. In addition, by working with the New Orleans City Council and City Planning Commission, the City will put into place new inclusionary housing policies that will require more affordable units at major new private multi-family developments. The City will also develop and completely redesign public economic incentives to further increase affordable housing production. Through these efforts, the City will incentivize an innovative, equitable and strong private housing market.

Of all the museums in New Orleans, perhaps none has done a better job programming for and attracting young professionals than the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. With their commitment to Happy Hours, live music, and other events, it's no surprise that it's one of the most beloved and well attended attractions in the city for 504ward members. And they've got another event coming up that y'all are going to love.

On Tuesday, June 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. the Ogden is hosting a craft happy hour, with drinks, admission to the museum, and a short class that will provide you with a basic guide to crafting homemade pop-up greeting cards. While we doubt your first will be as beautiful as the one in the photo, we think some of y'all might surprise yourselves with your skills. And at the very least, you can enjoy some drinks while you're doing so.

Tickets run $20 for members and $25 for non-members, and are available online right here. (If you aren't a member yet, check out the Ogden's member benefits. It's just sixty bucks, and comes with free admission to Ogden After Hours, White Linen Night, Art for Arts' Sake, and other Museum programming.) Member or not, though, the craft happy hour will mean a fun night of drinks and crafting, plus admission to one of the city's great museums. This is easy. We'll see you there.

Balboa is a swing dance form that developed in California in the 1920s and 30s. It is danced in closer embrace and when swing music gets too fast or the dance floor gets too crowded, Balboa Swing is the best form of swing dancing to use. You can incorporate it with other styles as well. It is just a convenient dance to rest or save space. Because it is danced in closer embrace, it has a very nice feel to it. .

DEAR THEATRE PARTONS!

We write to you with great anticipation and excitement as IN GOOD COMPANY THEATRE gears up for a season of drama, wit, and magic this coming summer and Fall!

You came out, gave us a chance, withstood a balmy New Orleans evening and supported last year's production of The Tempest. We couldn't have done it without you! In Good Company's first production sold out completely, fostered new collaborations and alliances, and landed us a full page feature in the New Yorker Magazine! We immediately began to plan a second season, and are so happy to announce the first production of the season to you.

After a successful online fundraising campaign, IN GOOD COMPANY, in collaboration with members of AEA, proudly presents:

Federico Garcia Lorca's
                   The House Of Bernarda Alba.

Returning to her native New Orleans in the title role, Kathleen McManus joins celebrated local actresses Sherri Marina and Carol Sutton with an ensemble of nine women in exploring Lorca's tragedy of oppression and jealousy in 1930s Spain.

Joining our team, local New Orleans visual artist Daphne Loney creates marionettes, shadow puppets and visuals as well as props and set pieces. Also returning are designers Jade Brandt (costumes) and Diane Baas (lights).

The House of Bernarda Alba runs in a limited 8 show engagement at The Tigermen Den, 3113 Royal St, New Orleans, 70117.

Performances are: June 23, 24, 25, 29, 30, July 1 and 2 at 8pm sharp.

TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE NOW at  albanola.brownpapertickets.com

There is a PAY-WHAT-YOU-WILL performance on Sunday, June 26, also at 8pm.

**Due to the nature of our playing space, there is no late seating.  Please note there are only 40 seats in our house, and no room to add extras, so please buy your tickets in advance!

We hope to see you all at The Tigermen Den later this month!

they're young, good-looking, and quick to fall in love.

the TWO GENTLEMEN of VERONA

Saturday's opening is already sold out, so get your tickets now for the other performances!
Young love doesn't always end in tragedy.

Shakespeare's romantic comedy - with a twist, of course - gives us some of the Bard's most memorable moments. Proteus has a devoted best friend and a girlfriend who adores him, but all that changes when he meets Silvia. Cross-dressing, music, bandits, broken hearts, and a scene-stealing dog make this one of Shakespeare's most delightful comedies.

Pontchartrain Hotel Opens

Philip Melancon returns to the Bayou Bar at the Pontchartrain Hotel this Thursday. He will be at the legendary piano every Thursday, Friday and Saturday beginning at 8 for . . . well, his last stint lasted twenty years.
The refurbished Pontchartrain is beautiful. The new investment group dropped $10 million dollars in it , upgrading the Bayou Bar, Silver Whistle and Caribbean Room. The rooms have also been addressees and the old penthouses are now incorporated into a swank rooftop bar. It's quite the entertainment venue, highly recommended.
Here's your options. The Caribbean Room and all food services are overseen by John Besh.  He has included several favorites of the 'Train including Mile High Pie. A bar menu is also available. The Silver Whistle is operating for morning and lunch guests. Blueberry muffins are back in the basket. The Bayou Bar has been up-graded. New floor, bar, seating, but still very much the feel of the old place. I am Philip and, of course, I'll be at the bar wrapped, drink sodden Steinway.
It is a fabulous night to visit this part of New Orleans history, part of which so many of us have taken part in. Come back and make some more.

Jazz pianist Ronnie Kole's smooth sound and elegant demeanor have earned him respect from musicians across the globe. Kole sharpened his skills in Al Hirt's club and Kole's Corner on Bourbon Street. He was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2012 and has recorded 32 CD/LP's. This New Orleans-based pianist keeps busy performing concerts across the United States, Europe and Asia.  For more information about the band, visit ronniekole.com.

July 28 - Ladies of Soul
You know Naydja CoJoe, Rechelle Cook, and Sharon Martin as, "The Ladies of Soul," having performed at the Garden with The Mystics. They will not only sing a bit of Motown, but also Jazz, R & B, and familiar New Orleans tunes.

August 4 - Bruce Daigrepont
Music came to Bruce at an early age, and in the most traditional manner--handed down from father to son. When he was growing up, no family gathering was complete without a little playing and singing. His father picked the guitar, "Carter Family-style," while his Uncle Alton lent a remarkable voice to the traditional Cajun songs and old-time country ballads. Bruce Daigrepont almost single-handedly has popularized Cajun music and Cajun dancing in cosmopolitan New Orleans.  For more information about the band, visit brucedaigrepont.com

August 11 - Julio and Cesar
Originally from Guatemala, Julio and Cesar Herrera have been in New Orleans for over 30 years.  They describe their music as constantly evolving, attributing this, in part, to their exposure from an early age to many cultures.  For more information about the band, visit julioandcesar.com.

August 18 - Pfister Sisters
Holley Bendtsen, Yvette Voelker, Debbie Davis and Amasa Miller comprise one of the few groups that represent the New Orleans swing era, with their recreation of the Boswell Sisters arrangements, and the only act featuring vocal jazz harmony. They bring joy to your soul, harmony to your ears, and the best and biggest boogie-woogie to your feet. For more information about the band, visit pfistersisters.com.

August 25 - Mark Brooks and Friends
Mark Brooks is one of New Orleans' most talented, versatile, and sought after bassist. Mark has played and toured with an array of artists including Dr. John, The Neville Brothers, Henry Butler, Charles and Aaron Neville's Ensembles, Lou Rawls, Fats Domino, Ellis Hall Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Harry Connick, Sr. Mark is known for his diversity with the different styles of music ranging from Rhythm & Blues, Contemporary Jazz, Traditional Jazz, Blues, and Gospel. On June 24, 1973, an arsonist set fire to the Up Stairs Lounge, a gay bar located on the edge of the French Quarter in New Orleans, Louisiana. The result was the largest gay mass murder in U.S. history. Thirty-two people were killed and some bodies were never identified. The primary suspect was never charged with the crime. UPSTAIRS INFERNO brings humanity to the headlines by shining a light on the very painful effect the tragedy had on survivors, witnesses and loved ones.
Written and directed by Robert L. Camina and narrated by New York Times best selling author, Christopher Rice.

New Orleans Pride and The Big Easy Sisters are proud to host the screening this documentary on the 43rd Anniversary of the Upstairs Lounge Fire.

June and July are blueberry picking months! With 5 farms within driving distance from New Orleans, a blueberry picking trip with your children is a must do this summer.

Picking your own berries is a really fun time for everyone in your family. Even the little ones can get in on the action. Besides just popping the delicious fruit right in your mouth, you can have a great time in the kitchen with your kids making blueberry smoothies, muffins, pie, cobbler, cookies, ice cream and more. You can also put it on your cereal or in your yogurt.

We all know blueberries taste good, but did you know they contain the most antioxidants of any fruit? Plus they have been proven to reduce DNA damage which helps to protect against aging and cancer!

A 1 cup serving (148 grams) of blueberries contains:

Fiber: 4 grams.
Vitamin C: 24% of the RDA.
Vitamin K: 36% of the RDA.
Manganese: 25% of the RDA.
Small amounts of various other nutrients.

Blueberries are also about 85% water, and an entire cup contains only 84 calories, with 15 grams of carbohydrates.

For the optimal picking experience, go in the early morning to avoid the extreme heat, wear sunscreen, and a hat. It's rained so much lately you should definitely wear your rubber boots.

Each farm listed below has there own instructions on how things are done on their farm so be sure to check out their sites and even give them a call if you have questions. Several only take cash or check for payment.

4th

Fourth annual July 4th flotilla (boat parade) on Bayou St. John at Dumaine Ave and Moss Ave. Starts at 5pm goes til sunset at 8pm. Please be kind to the neighbors and respectful of the environment. One neighbor on the bayou leads an empassioned life filled with hate for our beautiful parade and picnic. He works hard to get it shut down-don't give him or others the opportunity. Be an example of beautiful Americans celebrating our Nation's Independence Day. Respect our freedom to enjoy a day of friends on the Bayou: keep it classy and we will be able to continue this sacred tradition for years to come.
The King and Queen of Kolossos ask that in lieu of gifts you follow the following proclamations:
No litt ering: Overflowing public trash cans just mean trash blowing into the bayou...Dont add to it. Take your trash home. Fireworks cause tons of litter please do not bring them. Cigarette butts are litter. If you see litter around-please pick it up. Please no Mardi Gras beads, glitter, airborne trash or anything else coming off of your person
Cars: Don't ever drive your car or truck on the bayou to bring your boat in. This hurts the grass and the animal habitats in the banks. Do not block neighbor's driveways. Do not block street traffic.
You are responsible for your own safety. Life vests and sobriety are a magic equation for safety. Driving a boat while intoxicated can land you in jail for drunk driving.
Parade is weather permitting.
BOATS:
Bridges are very low, often less than 2 ft from the water. Only small boats, kayaks, and canoes and homemade designs will be short enough. Gas motors are not allowed. Small electric motors are allowed.
If you do not own a boat you can rent canoes, kayaks and paddle boards for about $25. I recommend reserving before July 4th as last year the demand was higher than the supply.

Tasting Notes
With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

Love New Orleans & She'll Love You Back.

Sincerely,

Frank Stansbury
