Community Forum for Robust Safeguards in Bill C-14

On Thursday, June 16th in Ottawa, Canadians with disabilities called upon lawmakers to limit medically assisted death to persons at the end of life, who are free from inducement and fully informed of all medical and social interventions that could ease their suffering.

At the Community Forum for Robust Safeguards in Bill C-14 hosted by the National Disability Rights Community and moderated by CACL Executive Vice-President, Michael Bach, the disability community let Parliamentarians know what is at stake for disabled Canadians and their families.

Walmart Achieves Success Through Inclusive Hiring Practices

For many businesses in the retail and service sector across the country, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find and keep hardworking and motivated employees. According to Tanya Peach, Store Manager at the Walmart East Supercentre in Saint John, NB, more than half of the 20 seasonal employees she hired at the start of the summer left before the season got into full swing.

Thanks to Ready, Willing and Able (RWA), Peach's hiring process has achieved remarkable success. Through RWA, Peach hired three individuals at the same time as the others, and all of them have stayed.

It's been a busy month!
Here are some highlights from our recent national work: 
  • CACL Executive Vice-President, Michael Bach, along with other members from the National Disability Rights Community held a press conference on the Vulnerable Persons Standard at the National Press Gallery in Ottawa
     
  • CACL organized a Community Forum for Robust Safeguards in Bill C-14 in Ottawa, with hundreds of individuals participating online to share their messages to Parliamentarians on holding the line in medically assisted death
  • CACL and IRIS met with New Brunswick Association for Community Living (NBACL) staff regarding inclusive research
     
  • Tara Brinston, Director of Policy & Program Operations, attended Minister Qualtrough's Accessibility Legislation announcement in Ottawa 
     
  • CACL moved into our new offices June 1st

Tourism HR Canada and Ready, Willing and Able Announce Partnership Agreement
 
Tourism HR Canada and Ready, Willing and Able are happy to announce a partnership that will allow the two organizations to work together towards the common goal of increasing participation in the Canadian tourism workforce.

In the coming decade, an aging population, along with other factors, will mean increased labour shortages in the Canadian tourism sector. 

Canadian tourism employers will need to look to under-represented labour groups to meet growing labour demands. Today, 12.3% of the tourism workforce report a disability, a number slightly lower than the average in the overall Canadian workforce.

Robert Martin, self-advocate, makes history with election to United Nations Committee

Robert Martin, one of the founding members of the self advocacy movement for people with intellectual disabilities in New Zealand and Life Member of People First New Zealand, has become the first person with an intellectual disability to be elected to serve on the United Nation's committee responsible for monitoring the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. 

This election makes Robert the first person with an intellectual disability to have a seat on any UN Committee in history. Robert was among nine new members elected to the committee June 14th, 2016 at the 9th Conference of State Parties at the United Nations headquarters in New York City.
