San Francisco 49ers seven-year veteran linebacker NaVorro Bowman says the rehab days following his 2014 knee injury are in the rear-view mirror. "It's totally different. I feel great," Bowman said. "Adding on days on top of days, I feel it sometimes, but it's nowhere near what I went through last year with the constant attention I had to put on it. This year I'm able to wake up and ride. The road has continued to get better for me, just like I knew it would."

Prior to the start of this year's 35th edition of the Race Across America (RAAM) there were a number of ultra-endurance bicycle racers that fans were touting as possible contenders, but few included rookie Pierre Bischoff on their list. The 31-year-old has been at the front of this year's 3,068-mile race, having taken the lead starting in Arizona. As of Sunday evening he was riding in Missouri, with the second place rider about 60 miles behind. But there's still over 1,300 miles to go before Bischoff can claim victory in this race from Oceanside, Calif., to Annapolis, Md. Expect Bischoff, or whichever rider manages to catch him, to finish sometime Thursday or Friday. Watch the race's progress at www.raceacrossamerica.org.
For written reports, video and photographs of RAAM visit www.ridefarther.com.

Dare to Dream: How James Madison University Became Coed and Shocked the Basketball World
By Lou Campanelli
and Dave Newhouse
|
Former Cal basketball coach Lou Campanelli and local veteran sportswriter Dave Newhouse have co-authored a book chronicling Campanelli's accomplishments as a successful collegiate basketball coach. Campanelli started in 1972, when he arrived at a small teachers college known as Madison College in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. The name was changed to James Madison University and Lou built the basketball program into national prominence before coming to Cal and returning the Bears program into a Pac-10 winner.
Co-author Dave Newhouse will be making the following appearances: Saturday, June 25, Castro Valley Library, 2 p.m. (general author talk); Saturday, July 23, Montclair Library, Oakland, 3 p.m. (general author talk).
The book can be ordered at Amazon.com and at bookstores.
