Join me in wearing orange on June 2 to support reducing gun violence

Posted by the Rt. Rev. Mark Beckwith on May 18, 2016
Wear orange on June 2

A friend of mine, who has been working on gun violence prevention for thirty years, has repeatedly told me that the engagement of faith groups is critical to the growing movement to reduce gun violence. This is not about gun control; it is about gun safety.

I am firmly convinced that we, as people of faith, can make a difference in this epidemic of gun violence - by framing it as a public health crisis rather than a constitutional issue. And I am convinced that our work in reducing gun violence is a critical and necessary ingredient of being part of the Jesus movement, to which Presiding Bishop Michael Curry has called us to join.

The following press release from Bishops United Against Gun Violence, of which I am a convener, outlines other ways for us to be engaged in this emerging movement. I hope you will consider these suggestions - and that you will join me on June 2, National Gun Violence Awareness Day, in wearing orange to show your support for efforts to reduce gun violence. Two young adults return from Missional Voices conference "encouraged" and "ready"

By the Rev. Ginny Dinsmore, Coordinator for Missional Church Strategy
Ben Miller and Janelle Grant
On April 15 and 16, two of our young adults, Janelle Grant of St. Paul's, Paterson and Ben Miller of St. Paul's, Englewood attended the Missional Voices 2016 Conference on the campus of Virginia Theological Seminary. According to its website, Missional Voices "began with a simple question: What if God is up to something really big and global but it can only be discovered through the small and local? It was through the exploration of that question that Missional Voices was born... gathering for the sake of reimagining church and transforming neighborhoods."

Here in our diocese, we have been pondering a similar question. In thinking both about who might represent the Diocese of Newark at the conference and how we can invite young adults into the ongoing conversation and learning here in our diocese of joining God in shaping our future, it seemed obvious to myself and Kai Alston that we ask two young adults to attend. Ben and Janelle share their reflections on the Missional Voices conference below. Read more

More dispatches from the "Going Local" journey
Going Local
Remember the Going Local congregations we heard from in March? The June 15 issue of The VOICE Online will feature coverage of their next regular gathering at which they will share what they have learned from their experiments and their plans to continue experimenting and creating meaningful space to listen to people's stories.

You will also hear more about the Action Learning Pilot Initiative announced at Diocesan Convention last January. Over the past six months, four teams of lay and clergy have been using an intentional problem solving approach to come up with recommendations for actions on two key challenges we face in our diocese. In June, they will be suggesting experiments to engage these challenges that impede our journey.

The Hegg Awards: Twenty years of honoring seniors for their time and talent
2015 Hegg Awards How often do we take the time to recognize individuals who have provided years of support to the ministries in our congregations? We are referring to our seniors, who are among the Diocese of Newark's most active and productive volunteers. Now is the time to honor these individuals for their leadership and wisdom and for the countless gifts of time and talent they have shared with their congregations and the community.

In this diocese, congregations can easily honor seniors by naming up to two members per year as recipients of the annual David P. Hegg III Lifetime Achievement Award. Read more.

This year the Senior Ministries Evensong & Hegg Awards will be held on Sunday June 12 at St. Peter's, Morristown. A reception will be held at 3 PM, with the Evensong following at 4 PM. The deadline for submitting Honoree information is Friday, June 3. Find out more.
