News from Chamber Members

When I was a kid, my brother and friends and I would gather around my mom's tape machine and record ourselves telling corny jokes and doing little skits with funny voices. As a middle school class clown, I would routinely knock 'em dead with my Howard Cosell impersonation. I later dabble d in college radio and started singing.
My career path led to "newspapering," including 23 years as a reporter, editor, columnist and blogger with  the Columbia Flier and Howard County Times.  But my voice was always there.

With newspapers rapidly heading the way of the telegraph, I decided to start monetizing my pipes. I got some coaching and a condenser microphone and set out to talk my way into a new career.

Voiceover work goes well beyond commercials and movie trailers. From outgoing phone messages for businesses (aka IVR) to training videos to game characters, you can find the recorded human voice in more places than you can imagine.

Since I started the Voice of Doug ( www.voiceofdoug.com), I've done a commercial and was the voice of Elvis in a game app. That's my voice you hear on the Howard County Chamber of Commerce's promotional video, and I again worked with fellow Chamber member Dan Medinger when he produced a web video for a monastery outside Philadelphia.

Mostly, I've worked on audiobooks, everything from presidential history to zombie apocalypse. The latter required me to do more accents than death moans.
The work itself is a blast. Getting the jobs, not so much. I've never been much of a salesman, and hustling potential clients is a skill I've been slow to acquire. But the Chamber's been helpful in that regard, bringing me into contact with people like Dan, and offering programming that's given me some marketing insights.
