Congratulations to our Energy CSTEM team! The team won:

1st place - The Innovation Challenge
1st place - Mural Challenge
1st place - Quiz Bowl
1st place - Sculpture Challenge
1st place - Photography Challenge
Exhibit Maker Space Award
STEM Teacher Leader of the Year (Dr. Hall)
National High School Grand Prize Award

Congratulations are in order for the Energy Institute High School C-STEM Teams for bringing home first place in five of the seven categories that they competed in. Our team won first place in Mural, Sculpture, Photography, Innovation and Quiz Bowl. They also won the Top Maker Space Award for the booth decorations, the Spirit Award for most spirited team, and Dr. Hall was named the STEM Teacher of the Year for the Southeast Region!

The students worked really hard this semester to get their idea, prototypes, and presentations ready so they could defend their top title from last year. They were all determined to do their best and make Energy Proud! As of today, the students and Dr. Hall received notification that Energy has also earned the National High School Grand Prize Award! This means that our team had the highest score nationally among all high schools who competed in the other regions for the C-STEM competition as well as our region. In addition, they will receive $1000 for being the top winners!

Special thanks to Ms. Phillips, Ms. R. Alexander, and Dr. Hall for serving as coaches for C-STEM this year! When students see teachers working together, they follow the lead and collaborate as well. Great Jobs C-STEM students and teacher leaders!

Students, if you do not know what C-STEM is then this is the perfect time to reach out to some of the members and get more information for next year. They are looking for additional dedicated student members to aid in the development of great ideas for the projects that they will create next school year. If you are ready to communicate through science, technology, engineering and mathematics then this is the organization for you.

Text Free Texas Scholarship Winner
Congratulations to Jacob Viser, who has earned a $250 scholarship from Abraham Watkins and Associates for his entry into the Text Free Texas Scholarship Competition. Jacob posted his pledge to not text and drive on the law firms website and completed a 500 word essay about the importance of not texting while driving.  Only four HISD schools were included in this year's competition and Jacob was selected as their scholarship winner for the 2016 Text Free Texas campaign.  Great job Jacob!  You are well on your way to preparing for your future!

Final Exam Exemptions
Final exam exemption forms are now available in the main office.  The forms must be completed with teacher signatures and turned into their dean the day before the final exam the student would like to exempt. Students can choose to participate in AP class exemptions or two final exam exemptions.  You cannot submit exemption forms for both. In order to exempt a final students must meet the following criteria:
  • Has a final spring semester average in the class of 85 or above
  • Three or fewer absences (excused and unexcused) in the specific class for the spring semester
  • Does not have any level three referrals for the spring semester.
Ninth grade students are eligible to exempt one final.  Tenth and eleventh grade students can exempt up to two finals.  A copy of the final exam exemption form has been included  here for your convenience.

To exempt AP final exams, students must complete the AP exemption form with teacher signatures and turn into their dean the day before their scheduled exam.  In order to qualify for AP exemption you must have a semester average of at least 90.  You can download the AP exemption form  here.
Laptop Check
Wednesday, May 25th, following students final exam, we will have our school wide Laptop Collection.

During the laptop collection:
  • Laptops, chargers, battery, carrying case, and shoulder strap will be inspected for accidental damage; they will be sent to summer repair and cleaning.
  • Serial Numbers on Laptop, Charger, Battery, and carrying case will be compared to our database; this is part of our property management system.
  • Students and parents will be invoiced for missing or lost equipment; this allows us to ensure that Energy Institute High School continues its extraordinary track record of being 100% Powered Up! Every student with their very own laptop!
Again, save the date to remind your child to bring all of their equipment for the laptop collection on, Friday, May 25th.
Lastly, please take the time to inspect your child's laptop, if you notice any damage, please have them report the damage to Mr. Cavazos in the Tech Spot so that we can send it off to repair as soon as possible. As always parents, thank you for your time and dedicated support.
Field Day
Finally, we are excited to announce that we will have an end of the year field day on Wednesday, May 25th - the last day of school. The PTO is working hard to make this day memorable. We will have carnival games such as a rock climbing wall, bungee trampoline, obstacle courses, a radio station providing tunes, face painting, a dunking booth, and refreshments. You won't want to miss it! We are asking that each student contributes $3. There will be a table set up during lunch to collect money. If for some reason you feel that financially you cannot make this contribution, please email Edgar Contreras at [email protected] and we will do what we can to support that need. All students are required to participate. Buses will depart at 3:30 on this day.
Summer School
We are excited to announce that we will be offering Art I for original credit this summer.  Art is required for graduation, but if you take it this summer you will have an extra spot in your schedule next year to take an elective of your choice!

Summer school registration will be May 31st from 9am-12pm.  We have several different sessions that will begin June 1st, continue to STAAR retakes, and end July 13th.

More information about summer school and courses being offered will be available as soon as final grades have been calculated and we have STAAR results.
