Spring has sprung, the water has cooled down, and the sargassum has undergone the final stage in its annual life cycle. Observers on the lookout for
Sargassum horneri
, the invasive 'devil weed', might be surprised to see it dying back. The adult plants have reproduced and spread the next generation across the seafloor. Continued monitoring of
S. horneri
is crucial to determine where it will be later this year to help LAW's volunteer divers determine where to stage removal efforts in the upcoming fall.

AW is thrilled to see nearly $200,000 awarded to the Bradley Green Alley Project,
Pacoima Beautiful
's urban greening initiative to convert an alley into a new community amenity. The funds are the result of a settlement LAW reached with Community Recycling & Resource Recovery, Inc. over the facility's pollution of the Los Angeles River. It is fitting that settlement funds will be invested in this important project that mitigates the impacts of polluted stormwater runoff on the River.

We mourn the loss of former LAW board member and longtime supporter Ozzie Silna. His support of our organization is just one example of Ozzie's commitment to environmental causes and giving back to the Los Angeles community. Ozzie was a true friend to LAW, particularly through some of our most challenging times, and we offer our sincere and heartfelt condolences to Ozzie's friends and family.

Dive Program: We are looking for scientific divers to participate in our new project focusing on the invasive algae Sargassum horneri. Divers who fulfill our pre-requisites (here) are welcome to join our volunteer corps, but anyone can help our tracking efforts by logging their observations through iNaturalist.

SUP Community Comes Together at Stand Up For Clean Water
|
Over 500 racers, beachgoers and supporters joined Los Angeles Waterkeeper on April 16 at Paradise Cove in Malibu for our 5th annual Stand Up For Clean Water paddleboard race, a Waterkeeper Alliance SPLASH Event presented nationally by Toyota and locally by Whole Foods Market of Venice.
What started and ended as a beautiful day at Paradise Cove, however, got a bit dicey in the middle as unusually high Santa Ana winds kicked up during the day's first race. "Many competitors were compelled to drop to their knees and even lie down and prone paddle,"
reported Matt Chebatoris
. Thankfully, potential disaster was averted due to quick thinking and inspiring community action, and
the event was still a major success!

LAW Urges West Basin to Reject Desal
|
LAW is working closely with
Heal the Bay, the Surfrider Foundation and other environmental groups to stop a proposed desalination plant from being built along our coastline in El Segundo. With the cities of
Manhattan Beach
and
Hermosa Beach recently joining the opposition, we are urging the West Basin Municipal Water District to reject the the proposed desal plant in favor of greater water conservation, stormwater capture and reuse, and the expansion of the agency's successful wastewater recycling facility.

Waterkeeper Magazine details how LAW's Executive Director Bruce brought together a coalition of environmental groups, business leaders, labor groups and social justice organizations to champion wastewater recycling in San Diego.
