We had a wonderful turnout for Matson "Bud" Ewell '40's remembrance service on April 30. The event ended appropriately with the singing of "Jerusalem."  Please click below to hear it.

"Jerusalem" at Ewell Remembrance
Bud Ewell Remembrance

The Ewell Remembrance brought alumni, former faculty, family, and friends together to celebrate the long life of our beloved Bud. We had a great group of speakers touch on Bud's past as a student at Harley, his ceaseless love for Ruth, antics with his sons, his time as an Air Force pilot, his boat building, and what an amazing father, teacher, and friend he was. Others spoke of his and Ruth's influence on the town of Fairport, his book collection, his life as a teacher at Harley, his poetry, his teaching philosophy and style, his beautiful singing, his personal investment in students, his patience, his kindness, and his wisdom. Thank you to Peter Ewell '66, Jennifer Mauldin, Jay Ewell '70, Len Wilcox, Al and Helen Soanes, Mike Lasser, Sara Prozeller Hartman '61, Ann Parsons '71, Charlotte Houghton '68, Maura Allen, and Lee Sherwood Allen '64 for sharing your wonderful words with us. Thank you to Jay Stetzer for playing the piano.

Helen Soanes quoted one of Bud's poems titled "The Teacher" that ended with:

When I, the great youth lover with perspective
Will hold life like a scepter in my hand
And meditating all the great, reflective
Thoughts, spread them for the young to understand;
For I'll have lived, and lived in such a way
That I'll be rich...and giving truth away

For those of you unable to attend, you are able to watch the Ewell Remembrance service. Please note that this is 1 hour and 26 minutes long.

Peter Ewell has also put together a book of the memories and comments shared about his father that include the remarks from the folks listed above. It is available at the School.
 In Memoriam

Alan Whiting, former Lower School Assistant Head, passed away on April 11 at the age of 84. He worked at The Harley School from 1989 to 1995. He was hired by Pam Kimmet and when I spoke to her about Alan, she said that he had a wonderful sense of humor and that the teachers appreciated his wisdom and gentleness. She said he was very dedicated and committed to the School.  Marilyn Fenster shared that he was a well-regarded administrator in the West Irondequoit school system when she was a student. He was known as someone deeply committed to providing the best education possible to all children who were lucky enough to cross his path. He volunteered in city schools as a reading tutor. He was always on the prowl for good books he could share with "his kids."  Dean Kindig also shared a memory of Alan leading the entire lower school in stretching exercises every day during a Focus Week.

The current lower school teachers recently donated the book Sleepless Knight (Adventures in Cartooning) by James Sturm to the Lower School Library in honor of Alan and his love of cartooning.

Pat Andreas passed away on May 2nd. Pat ran the Harley Kitchen from 1982-1996 and had a true love for cooking and freely shared her amazing family recipes, some of which the Kitchen still makes to this day.

Stephen May '49 passed away on March 31 at the age of 85. Following his graduation from Harley, he went on to earn a bachelor's degree in American Civilization from Wesleyan University in 1953. After Wesleyan, he joined the U.S. Army and while there, he took an interest in politics and government. He went on to receive his JD from Georgetown University Law School in 1961. He served as Rochester's 62nd mayor from 1970-1973. He had quite a career with the U.S. government,  including his job as a staffer of the U.S. Senate and with Congress. He and his wife, Katie have graciously hosted several alumni gatherings for The Harley School in the Washington, DC area. We are so thankful for all their support to The Harley School over the years.

Karin Deutsch Karlekar '89 will be featured in our next Commons Speaker Series.
Free Speech in Danger?

Seen as a fundamental human right, free expression is protected in the United States by the First Amendment and globally by Article 19 of the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Threatened at home in recent years by mass surveillance, restrictions on campus free speech, and attempted book bans, the global situation is no better. Writers, journalists, and ordinary citizens alike face threats from imprisonment to murder as a result of their expression.

Discussing political, economic, and cultural factors, #PressFreedom guru Dr. Karin Deutsch Karlekar will give a snapshot of the state of free speech around the world. Currently the director of PEN America's Free Expression Programs, Karlekar's work has spanned Human Rights Watch, The Economist Intelligence Unit, and Freedom House, and taken her on advocacy missions to countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia

Karin will be on campus  May 26-27 , and her evening presentation in The Commons will be on  Thursday, May 26 from 6 pm-7:30 pm . She will spend Friday on campus with the students. Please plan to join us!

Alumni in Action
Jordan Benjamin '15 was named the Atlantic 10 Conference men's  Rookie Performer of the Year. This is a prestigious award voted on by the league's twelve coaches. This follows his recent award of Rookie of the Year  at the University of Dayton. Jordan is ranked 26th in his class nationally and had a 108-8 record during his career at Harley, finishing in third place at states in singles. His twin sister,  Kristina Benjamin '15 , is a member of the women's tennis team at Dayton.

Chris Hartman '93 was recognized with the first annual  Singer Family Prize for Excellence in Secondary Teaching , awarded through the University of Rochester. The award ceremony took place on May 14, with further recognition at the University of Rochester's Commencement  ceremony  on May 15.

Chris was nominated by Ulrik Soderstrom '11. Ulrik was in Chris's first "official" class and participated in the Bridges program as a Harley-Horizons Upper School connection.

I reached out to Ulrik about why he nominated Chris and he sent along the nomination letter he wrote. Here is an excerpt:

Chris Hartman intrinsically motivates and empowers students. He simultaneously challenges them to question the world around them, while encouraging the growth of their personal identities and strengths.

Hartman is explosively creative in his role as a teacher at The Harley School and in the City of Rochester. He leads sustainability classes, constructs greenhouses in the back field of the school, builds boats with students of diverse backgrounds to encourage teamwork and understanding in the City of Rochester... even empowers students through open roles in his local sustainable food company... Hartman inspired me to become passionate about sustainability, which has been a catalyst for my career interests and future plans.

Hartman taught me to put the 'why' before the 'what.' While I became interested in sustainability, he showed me to passionately investigate how to do my part with excellence.

Also recognized at the award ceremony were Madeleine Laitz '12 (above, L in left photo) and Ulrik Soderstrom '11 (above, R in right photo). Maddie received the Robert L. Wells Prize, given to the highest-ranking senior engineering student for "demonstrated competence in both engineering and the humanities." Ulrik received the Ayman Amin-Salem Memorial Prize, presented to the senior who "best evidences the quality of good character and good citizenship, such as decency, reliability, responsibility, and congeniality." Ulrik, president of the University of Rochester senior class council, also spoke at graduation.

Rob Richardson '01 was recently featured in a "Student Spotlight" for his work in the SUNY Brockport Masters in Public Administration (MPA) program. Rob, who has a bachelor's degree from the University of Hartford, says, " Completing a secondary degree has been on the "to do" list since finishing undergrad, and is something I wanted to finish before starting a family.... After consistent encouragement from an extremely supportive spouse, I applied last summer and was accepted." He is expected to finish the program in May 2017. He plans to pursue a career in public policy, public management, or lobbying.

Rob also shared that he has been chosen as a Graduate Assistant in the MPA department for the 2016-2017 year.

Michael Tomb '72's  latest film, Century, was an official selection at the second annual Rochester's Fast Forward Film Festival Century is a  "short that examines the diversity of environments, species and people." Last year, Michael's film, Epiphany, was a runner-up in the Strongest Call to Action category at the festival.

Asha Hotaling, Harley 7th grader, also had a film selected in the festival's youth category. Her film,  Apples: The Core Dilemma, "discusses the difference between local vs. organic apples."

The Fast Forward Film Festival was founded by Harley alumni parent, Andrew Stern P' 99. We are proud of the Harley connection and this growing film festival in the area.

Featured Alumni Writers

Joshua Dienstag, a member of the class of '82, has a  new book, Cinema, Democracy, Perfectionism: Joshua Foa Dienstag in Dialogue coming out in September. This book is about the role of art in politics, specifically whether the prevalance of film is a good or a bad thing for democracy. Joshua's lead essay, which imitates a famous letter by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, is followed by commentary from five other professors (and then Joshua's reply).

This is Joshua's third book. His two previous books are Dancing in Chains: Narrative and Memory on Political Theory, and Pessimism: Philosophy, Ethic, Spirit. Joshua is a Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Los Angeles

His book will be available on  Amazon in September.

As we prepare for Harley's upcoming Centennial Celebration we are reaching out to the Harley community to help us plan the big celebration weekend on October 13-15, 2017. A recently formed Alumni Parent committee has been extremely helpful in our efforts. Pictured above is about half the group. Our current members are Tammy Allen, Judy Andrews, Kay Benjamin (co-chair), Kelly Boocock (co-chair), Catherine Burke, Trish Corcoran, Gi-Gi Dewan, Carla Giambrone, Priscilla Gumina, Jan Kennedy, Cindy Malone, Sue Parkes McNally, Valerie Myntti, Lisa Palumbo, Debbie Scudder, Lynn Vacanti, and Deb Zornow-Fink
