Level Grade Crossing Update

If you have an active CN or CP rail line that intersects with a municipal road in your community, you may be interested in this form  and accompanying instructions   provided to SUMA by Transport Canada last month. The documents should  help road authorities  collect and share the information about each rail crossing with the rail carriers, as required by November 27, 2016 to comply with new federal grade crossing regulations

Not sure if you have an active CN or CP crossing? Transport Canada recently released its complete  Grade Crossing Inventory on the Government of Canada's new Open Government Portal. The dataset includes the location and road authority responsible for each rail crossing in the country.

Questions about the form or any issues specific to your municipality can be directed to Transport Canada's Rail Safety Branch:  [email protected], or toll-free: 1-844-897-RAIL (1-844-897-7245).

Aquatic Invasive Species

May 8 - 14 was proclaimed  Aquatic Invasive Species Awareness Week   by the Government of Saskatchewan. Of imminent concern is the potential spread of Zebra and Quagga Mussels via boats being moved from infected areas in the United States, Manitoba, and Ontario. Unlike native freshwater mussels, these invasive species create expensive problems by encrusting submerged surfaces like water intake pipes, irrigation lines, and screens.

In April, SUMA sent a joint letter to Environment Minister Herb Cox alongside our sister associations, the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) and the Provincial Association of Resort Communities of Saskatchewan (PARCS), urging action on aquatic invasive species. Awareness, inspections, and decontamination are critical parts of protecting our water bodies and water-related infrastructure.

To see what your municipality can do, we recommend checking out the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association's recent webinar Here in Saskatchewan, the Ministry of Environment has produced information, like this poster , to share with residents.
