5 Things You Need to Know About Medi-Cal Expansion for All Children

Beginning May 16, 2016, all lower income children under age 19 will qualify for full-scope Medi-Cal services, regardless of immigration status. This expands coverage to an estimated 170,000 undocumented children in the state of California.

While the expansion of Medi-Cal allows children to enroll in health care, more needs to be done for the millions of adults locked out of accessing health care. Everyone deserves access to health care, regardless of where they were born.

#LivingInMisery - A Fresno Bee Investigation misery

Thousand of Fresnans are living in misery - and advocates have been pushing Fresno City Council to hold slumlords accountable for years.

With the tragedy that happened at Summerset Apartments late last year and more tenants speaking about their slum living conditions, it's time to hold the City of Fresno accountable for enforcing the law and protect the public health of tenants by bringing down slumlords.

Advocates Successfully Push Fresno Unified to Invest In Youth!

Thanks to the advocacy and organizing efforts of the Fresno Building Health Communities' Schools Action Team, Fresno Unified School District will be investing $2.5 million in English Learners which includes an update to the English Learner Master Plan - but, more still needs to be done.

With millions of tax dollars coming to the district, thanks to the Local Control Funding Formula, community leaders are calling on the district to #InvestInYouth and have presented the following recommendations:
  • Allocate at least 1% of Local Control Funding Formula money to new family engagement approaches that impact student achievement;
  • Hire more staff as "Community Connectors" who are well-trained to provide social-emotional supports;
  • Complete a community-driven English Learner Master Plan.
Last month, Fresno Building Healthy Communities schools advocates brought together more than 50 community leaders and residents to talk about the coalition's recommendations and how to get involved in the process at a community town hall held at Mosqueda Center.

Residents have the right to tell the Fresno Unified School Board to spend money on students that need it most. Hold our elected school board accountable! They work for us!

Hundreds Take Part in Skate Park Grand Opening skatepark

More than 350 community members and skaters attended the Fresno Building Healthy Communities Skate Park at Romain Grand Opening last week.

The state-of-the-art park spans 15,000 square feet and replaces and temporary makeshift skate park located behind Romain Park.

"Parks strengthen our communities by improving our overall health, boosting our economy, and making our communities safer," said Sandra Celedon-Castro, Fresno Building Healthy Communities hub manager. "The Fresno Building Healthy Communities Skate Park at Romain is an example of how the community has come together to address south Fresno's park disparity and why it's important that decision-makers include residents to identify solutions and create parks for all."

Last year, Fresno Building Healthy Communities approached The California Endowment to secure funding and partnered with the SLS Foundation (SLSF) and California Skateparks to bring a new park to south Fresno. Several community meetings were held and more than 250 young people gathered each time and shared their ideas for the parks design. After breaking ground in January, California Skateparks replaced rusty ramps with brightly colored, state-of-the-art ledges, banks, stairs and rails ideal for any skater.
