Healthy Snack Ideas for you Teen Challenge Program
When planning snacks for your Teen Challenge physical activity program, it's important to ensure that healthy options are provided. Providing healthy food and beverage choices according to Canada's Food Guide ensures that teens are getting the energy and nutrients they need to feel their best and to be physically active. Try these simple snack ideas for your next program:
- Fresh fruit cup or canned fruit salad with cheese string
- Fruit and yogurt parfaits
- Apple slices and hard cheese portions
- Hummus and carrot sticks or pita chips
- Whole wheat bagel with cream cheese or peanut butter* & canned fruit
- Air-popped popcorn and milk
- Pretzels and hard cheese portions
- Whole grain cereal and milk
Note: Be aware of your facility's allergy policy before serving nuts or nut butters.
Success Story
Deer Lake Spikers Volleyball Team
Volleyball started in October and became a town team in December. We started off with no name, make shift jerseys, very little skill, borrowed equipment, and limited coaching. To say that the team has flourished is an understatement. The Deer Lake Spikers are a bunch of extremely dedicated, most sportsmanlike and very eager to learn teens.
We have girls who have never played a sport or showed interest in any extracurricular activities until volleyball! We boast a 90% academic average for the team and have gained much physical and skill wise. The Spikers have played in 4 tournaments altogether from Grand Falls to Port aux Basques taking away great experience, confidence, physical gains, not to mention a well-deserved bronze medal at regionals!
These girls take fitness seriously and take advantage of every opportunity to practice even at the drop of a dime! With dedicated parents, coaches, schools and community we have a strong team spirit that will foreseeably continue will into the teenage years.
Success Story
Calgary Jump Rope Club (Skip Time) - Calgary, Alberta
Not quite an ordinary day at the mall for these girls; They weren't shopping the latest fashions! On Sunday, the skiptime teens took to the mall to demonstrate their sport of Jump Rope. The girls are part of the Skiptime competitive team who train in individual and team jump rope competitions for speed, endurance, and design routines to music.
The Skiptime girls were keen to help other girls try out their sport, so they did not just demonstrate, the Skiptime girls gave out ropes and a lesson to other Mall-goes to give jump rope a try.
The mall event was a great success. The participating girls had great smiles on their faces trying a new sport on their day at the mall. Thank you ParticipACTION and Coca-Cola Canada for this program to get teens moving, Ivivva for your mall space, and Skiptime girls.
