From City of Albion Finance Department:
As most of you are aware, the deadline for filing your 2015 City of
Albion income tax return (also known as your "local" income tax return)
was April 30th. However, we are discovering that there appears to be some
misunderstanding in regards to who needs to file.
We have heard some people say that they didn't bother to file their local
income tax return this year (or in prior years) because they didn't owe the City
any money. Or maybe they had a small refund due to them and they didn't
feel it was worthwhile to file a return for such a small refund.
PLEASE REMEMBER
, generally speaking, EVERY resident and EVERY
non-resident who worked within the City limits, who had a gross income of
$600 or more MUST file a return
(the threshold is $1,200 if the taxpayer is 65
or older). The consequences for not filing a return can be quite severe, so please
remember to file your return even if your refund is small, or if you don't owe
any money with the return. The tax returns are available on the City's website.
Another misunderstanding that we frequently hear of involves taxpayers who
file their returns electronically (like when using TurboTax for example), or who
believe their tax accountant has electronically filed their returns on their behalf.
PLEASE UNDERSTAND, the City does not have the capability to receive
local tax returns electronically. So even if TurboTax or other tax software
tells you your local tax return is being submitted electronically, you still must
deliver a hard copy of your return to the City.
The City may get the required technology in the future, but for now, all local
income tax returns must be delivered (in person or via mail) to the City.
If you have any questions regarding your local City of Albion income tax return,
please feel free to contact the City Income Tax Department at (517) 629-7865.
