This comic farce, spoofing the operetta genre follows movie star Lily Garland and her Svengali, former lover and failed theatre producer, Oscar Jaffee, as they make the trek from Chicago to New York in only sixteen hours aboard the titular luxury liner.  Originally starring John Cullum and Madeleine Kahn, this show was recently revived on Broadway with Kristin Chenoweth.

NEVER BEEN TO A STAGED READING?
HERE'S WHAT TO EXPECT:
With a 25-hour rehearsal period allowed by Actor's Equity, all actors hold scripts while performing the entire script and score of the musical.  A small orchestra, minimal props and no scenery or costumes, think of it as radio theatre and a great way to experience these lesser known or older classic shows.

This performance will be held at the
Carpenter Performing Arts Center
6200 East Atherton Street on the campus of California State University Long Beach.

ADDITIONAL CASTING ANNOUNCED
NEXT WEEK

13 PERFORMANCES ONLY
JULY 8 -24, 2016

After thrilling MTW audiences as Richard Henry Lee in 1776, Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha, King Arthur in Spamalot, Mack Sennett in Mack & Mabel, and Harold Hill in The Music Man, Broadway star and MTW favorite Davis Gaines returns to take on the role of Lawrence Jameson the high class con man (originally played by Michael Caine in the film and John Lithgow in the Broadway musical) in this summer's DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS.

Gaines is best known for his turn as the Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera, in which he starred more than 2,000 performances during the show's run on Broadway, in Los Angeles, and in San Francisco.  Webber and Hal Prince then turned to Gaines to play the leading role in the World Premiere of Whistle Down the Wind.  His other Broadway and National Tour credits include Cornelius Hackl in Hello, Dolly! opposite Carol Channing, Camelot with Richard Burton, and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.  Gaines portrayed Hannibal Lecter in SILENCE! The Musical (LA Weekly Award, "Best Male Musical Performance"), and appeared as Fred/Petruchio in Kiss Me, Kate (Ovation Nomination, "Best Lead Actor in a Musical").   For PBS, he appeared in three Great Performances broadcasts, including the Emmy Award-winning "Sweeney Todd," "Broadway Originals," and "Jerry Herman's Broadway at the Bowl."  Gaines made his Los Angeles-area directing debut at MTW's production of Oklahoma!

From the composer/lyricist of  The Full Monty  comes DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS the hilarious, and often risqué Broadway musical based on the Steve Martin and Michael Caine film.  Two con artists working on the French Riviera decide that the first to swindle "America's Soap Queen" out of $50,000 can stay in town and the loser has to beat feet.

SISTER ACT STUDENT MATINEES
The theatre was filled with students at the Carpenter Center to watch this amazing show.  Students left singing and dancing, relating to the wonderful performances onstage.

When asked what the students' favorite part was, one teacher responded: " Oh my goodness! They are still talking! I think my favorite was the students who at the conclusion of each number in the show would yell, "Ten...Ten!" His chaperone told him to stop yelling ten, so when the next number ended, he yelled "Twelve!". His chaperone then told him that clapping and not his "on a scale of one to ten" scoring method would do."

Another teacher added, "They liked all of the "big" scenes and songs. They particularly liked the songs where Dolores created change in the world."
Over 28 classes were visited during the three weeks prior to the Student Matinee in order to prepare each of the students for their upcoming visit.  Teachers raved that, "The pre-show workshop was hugely beneficial. Students were not only informed and prepared for their theater experience, but also excited about the show."

Thanks to generous donations from our sponsors, the students were able to attend the show free of charge, as well as receive assistance with busing the students to the theatre. Over half of the audience had never seen a live musical theatre production, and left eager for more. Overall, the students loved the production and many wanted to come back and watch it again.

OUR TRAVELING EDUCATION SHOW
In other Education news, our travelling show "Celebrate You" has had over 13 performances at various schools in the area.  "Celebrate You" explores how musical theatre characters have overcome bullying and teaches the various methods one can use to overcome this obstacle.  The show has gotten rave reviews with principals and teachers who appreciate the lessons of the show.  The cast talk-backs have allowed students to ask any questions they have ranging from what it is like being in theatre to real life examples of overcoming bullying.
