A Message from Andrea
Israel Independence Day and Change

Just yesterday, we celebrated Yom Ha'atzmaut, Israeli Independence Day, and after all the dancing and singing and games and delicious food, there was time for contemplation.  Contemplation over how one articulates a dream and then works to achieve it.  There is much inspiration to draw from the beginning of the dream, to the founding of the State in 1948, and the future vision we continue to work toward.

This year Schechter celebrates 45 years. Schechter began with a dream that was shared and developed with the community. Hard work, commitment, and generosity resulted in Schechter's founding.  And like the State of Israel, the founding is truly another beginning and not the end point; like the State, our Schechter continues to grow and stretch and reach for even bigger dreams.

While there are countless lessons to be learned from the founding of the State of Israel, some are, the road map for building; the resilience in the face of hardship and sometimes failure; and the dual combination of fear and excitement in the face of change and the unknown.

The vision that guides our work at Schechter is both aspirational and inspirational: The Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Hartford graduates students who are bold, creative, resilient and flexible; students who know how to ask questions and learn, who are guided by a solid moral compass and a sense of urgency to improve the world. Schechter graduates will be positioned to contribute in a meaningful way to both the Jewish and American communities and be outstanding role models for goodness.

Every decision and every step we take at Schechter is toward this goal. It requires venturing into the unknown, taking big strides that move us in new directions, and trust that even in the face of anxiety and fear we are moving boldly toward this vision.

Every dream worth dreaming is audacious. At Schechter we are embracing audacity and boldness and we are framing it with compassion and thoughtfulness.

We look forward to celebrating our dream and our work at this year's Ner Tamid Gala honoring Anja and Gene Rosenberg and family and Leah Berson for her excellence in volunteerism on Tuesday, May 17 at the Bushnell. For tickets please call the Bushnell directly.

Shabbat Shalom,
Andrea

Schechter Celebrates From Generation to Generation
Over the past few months, second grade students have been working on a book describing a special person in their lives. For their book, From Generation to Generation they interviewed their subject, learning about the similarities and differences between the generations. One of favorite questions was, "What was the most special time you had with me?"

Last Friday, second grade students honored the special person in their lives with a meaningful assembly in the school auditorium. Sitting on the stage along side their special person, each student spoke about their person and presented them with the book they wrote. Anya Leshem interviewed her Grampa who gave her six wonderful pieces of advice, the last one being "Don't forget to root for the Red Socks!"  Anya replied, "Sorry Grampa, Go Yankees!"

Schechter Celebrates Israel 68th Independence Day
Yesterday, students and staff at Schechter celebrated Yom Ha'Atazmaut, Israel's Independence Day with joy and gladness. The celebration began with singing in the Beit Tefillah as the students gathered dressed in blue and white. Everyone paraded outdoors with Israeli flags held high and met at the flagpole, where the Israeli flag was raised above the school as students and teachers sang  Hatikvah, the Israeli national anthem.

Then, students proceeded through four different stations, participating in a variety of activities. At each station, students from Kindergarten through grade six were assisted by seventh graders. At the Israeli dancing station, every group learned the same dance so that as a school all could participate. At station two the students used foam boards, etched a design into it, loaded them with paint, and created a beautiful banner for the school. Station three was Israeli singing and station four was an Israeli Boot Camp obstacle course led by young Israeli Emissary Edo Shiloh.

8th Grade Israel Experience
Tuesday Recap from June Laub

Ben Gurion's Vision: We started off the day strong with tefillah that included a wide and beautiful view of Mitzpe Ramon (a large valley surrounded by mountains). We took the time to spend a few minutes in silence, providing the opportunity for deep thought. We then hiked up Ein Avdat, a mountain that began mild and ended with a refreshing combination of steep staircases and ladders. We were rewarded for our climbing wit h another scenic view.

Later, we were brought to Ben Gurion's grave upon which we were able to place a rock.  This was followed by a lunch that differed quite a bit from the others so far. We were split into groups, given a budget, and sent into a grocery store. Not only did we end up with a delicious lunch, we grew closer through problem solving and friendly debate.

After that, we drove to the Shvil Hasalat Agricultural "museum." There we toured through several greenhouses, learning about fruits and vegetables that we then tasted, including cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and strawberries (in  fact, some of the freshest and tastiest). In addition to food, we were also educated about messenger pigeons and released a few ourselves. Then we were taken back to the hotel where we were given a great dinner and changed into white shirts. These were for a ceremony for Yom Hazikaron (the Israeli Day of Remembrance). We heard stories of those who lost their lives fighting for Israel and songs sang in memorial. It truly displayed the unity and respect that Israel has, especially on this important day.

Victoria's Memory Walk
Dear Solomon Schechter Community,

I would like to invite you to participate in, and support my Bat Mitzvah Project.  I have chosen to raise awareness and raise funds for the Jewish Family Services of Greater Hartford (JFS) whose mission  is to enhance and strengthen quality of life through the Jewish tradition of caring and compassion.  In particular, I chose this organization for personal reasons - my grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's when I was only one-year - old and the impact this disease has had on our family has been both heavy and sad. I truly never knew my grandmother and she never had the chance to know me either. I never had the chance to go shopping with her, share an ice cream moment or even a good laugh with her. I never had the chance to discuss school projects or my latest book interests. She never had the chance to see me on stage   and I know she would have been so proud. All I know about my grandmother I learned through pictures, and the numerous visits that left me numb and crying for more.  To this day she is still beautiful, elegant and witty. She is just no longer there. Through my grandfather's eyes and dedication I learned what the word compassion truly means. Today, after 11 years of living with this devastating disease, he is still by her side, daily.

I found out recently that JFS offers excellent programs for Early Memory Loss. In partnership with Hebrew Health Care, JFS offers support for people over 60 experiencing cognitive impairment and early memory loss.  Participants learn how to navigate the complex emotions associated with memory loss and gain insight and clarity by talking about their experiences with memory loss.  I have decided to support this specific program because this cause it is close to my heart.

On Sunday May 15th from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm I am going to organize a walk at the Farmington Reservoir called "Victoria's Memory Walk." We will all meet in the parking lot at 10:00 am to register before the walk. It will be something anyone can do - regardless of ability or age. It's all about having fun! I am asking each participant to donate at least ten dollars ($10.00) to JFS.

In addition, on  Friday, May 13 , I would like everyone in school (faculty and staff included) to wear purple and donate at least one dollar to JFS in honor of my grandmother - to be collected by the Student Council.  I will be matching all funds raised that day.

This is going to be a fun and rewarding day!  Please RSVP before May 11 to [email protected].
