May is starting out to be another busy month here in Lee. I've been busy visiting Homeowner and Civic Association Meetings a few times a week, continuing with the Lines of Business (LOBs) process as the budget chairman, discussing the challenges of education funding, and working to help implement the new Embark Richmond Highway project that you'll read more about below. As always, there's a lot going on. I hope you take advantage of all the great things that are available in Lee!

Embarking on the Future of Richmond Highway

The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation completed a study recommending the installation of dedicated bus rapid transit lanes to Prince William County in the short term and extending Metro's Yellow Line to Hybla Valley in the long term. To facilitate this change, a task force was assembled to oversee land use, transportation planning, design and construction.  Embark Richmond Highway, as the effort is known, will focus primarily on planning for walkable, urban-style mixed use development near future transit stations with the goal of creating vibrant, active communities where people can live, work, shop, and play.

This past Monday was the first community meeting to discuss the project. This is a re- write of the land use plan to promote revitalization and is just the project that South County needs -- and deserves. I'm excited to hear the community's thoughts and ideas on this and to begin work on this massive project. More info available here.
Join a Working Meeting on the Future of Lake Accotink Park

Members of the public are encouraged to participate in the revision of Lake Accotink Park's master  plan by attending an information meeting and workshop at Kings Glen Elementary School on May  16 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

For the past year, the Fairfax County Park Authority has been studying ways to make Lake Accotink  Park more environmentally and financially sustainable. Study results will be shared at the meeting  and community members will be invited to offer their thoughts about the park's future.

Park  Authority staff and consultants will present the various options being considered, and small groups  will be formed to discuss and evaluate the options.

The Park Authority hosted an open house community meeting on March 14 to introduce the master  plan revision project, get public input, and share a wealth of information about Lake Accotink Park.

The presentation from that evening can be found on the project website at

The website is also the place to follow the progress of the Lake Accotink Park Master Plan Revision  and take a quick survey on what you enjoy most about Lake Accotink and what changes you would l ike to see.

Lord and Lady Fairfax
Next month at our Board meeting we will be celebrating the nominees for Lord and Lady Fairfax. I chose to nominate Burnette Scarboro and Jack Pitzer. The two of them are truly extraordinary members of our community and I'm proud to have them as Lord and Lady of Lee.
Burnette Scarboro has been an integral part of the Fairfax County volunteer community. She's dedicated her life to creating an active and healthy learning environment for children.

Burnette has been extremely involved and active in Lee District, Fairfax County and throughout Virginia. She is a member of VA State PTA Board, the Northern Virginia District PTA Director, and a member of the Lt. Governor's Commonwealth Council for Childhood Success.

Locally, she is the Coordinator of the West Potomac-Mount Vernon School-Community Coalition, a member of the Ad Hoc Police Review Committee, co-founder of South County Youth Network, a non-profit organization, the African Heritage Early Literacy Project Leader as well as the Family Engagement Representative for our schools. The contributions she has made to our community are innumerable.

Burnette Scarboro makes Lee District a better place for people of all ages.

At our last Board meeting, May 2-6, 2016 was designated as Teacher Appreciation Week in Fairfax County. To our teachers, thank you for the fantastic job you do. We support you and thank you for the work you do every day. It's important for our teachers to know how valued they are and their vital importance to our community.

Jack Pitzer exemplifies what it means to be an active part of a community. He has volunteered more than 100 hours per year at Frying Pan Farm Park and has served on their board for more than 25 years. He also serves as the Hayfield Farm Garden Club President, promoting civic beauty and conservation of natural resources.

He has been committed to volunteering since his sons were in 4-H, the nation's largest positive youth development and youth mentoring organization, empowering six million young people in the U.S., and became heavily involved at the annual fair at the Park. In addition to all his service at Frying Pan, serves on the strategic board for his church and sings with the Alexandria Harmonizers barbershop chorus.

Jack is an important member of the Lee District and Fairfax County communities. He contributes to many different aspects of our County and he uses his talents to make our community a better place.
