Shabbat Shalom
From Rav Tomer Ronen
In this week's parsha, Kedoshim, we read the famous commandment, "ve'ahavta l'rayecha kamocha" ("you should love your neighbor as yourself."). Rabbi Akiva comments in the Gemara Yerushalmi, "zeh k'lal gadol baTorah" ("this is an important rule in the Torah").

Of course, we all know the famous story of Hillel teaching the whole Torah while standing on one leg by saying, "what you don't want done unto yourself, don't do unto others. And everything else is commentary."  But how does that one sentence cover the whole Torah? After all, it seems to address only the relationship ben adam le'chavero, between people.  What about the mitzvot that address the relationship between people and Hashem?

The Chazon Ish asks and answers this very question by explaining that if a person is willing to give something up for his friend, then he will also be driven to make sacrifices for Hashem. In other words, one's ability to do all the mitzvot in the Torah is directly related to how one interacts with other people. This is such an important lesson to teach our children, and one that is best learned by example. The way we treat others throughout the course of a normal day can have an incredible impact on someone else. A simple smile or a kind word can change someone's outlook. What a powerful and empowering message to share with our children!

Luckily, we all have a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate this value through BPY's upcoming 8th Annual Scholarship Walkathon which we launched this week. This event is all about our communal responsibility to one another and to ensuring that every Jewish child who wants a Jewish education can have one. We will be preparing the children in school for the event over the coming weeks but it is your commitment, discussion, and participation at home that really solidifies the message that we are all responsible for one another. This is what it means to be part of a community.

Earlier this week, we also hosted our annual Community Yom Ha'zikaron Commemoration Ceremony followed by our incredible Yom Haatzmaut programming and celebration. I want to give a special thank you to our incredible staff who really went above and beyond to ensure that these experiences would be impactful and meaningful for the entire community. This week was truly a highlight of the year. Todah rabbah to everyone who worked to hard to make it happen!

Shabbat Shalom,
Rav Tomer Ronen
8th Annual Scholarship Walkathon Launch
BPY's 8th Annual Scholarship "OLYMPIC" Walkathon officially launched earlier this week! Holding his torch and gold medal, Rav Ronen announced this year's OLYMPIC theme in honor of the summer games in Rio De Janeiro. After watching a fun video (see below), Rav Ronen led the students outside where they joined Coach Van and his assistant coaches to participate in fun warm up exercises and races to help get everyone into the OLYMPIC WALKATHON spirit!

BPY's walkathon supports our school's scholarship fund and helps ensure that BPY remains accessible to every family who wants a BPY education for their children. In only two days, we have more than 55 pages up and over $10,000 raised!

Set up your page today at
and start getting sponsorships for this important cause!

Yom Hazikaron Community
Commemoration Ceremony
BPY junior high students and faculty led a deeply moving Yom Hazikaron Commemoration Ceremony for the community on Tuesday night, which they repeated in school for their peers the next morning. Special thank you to our featured speaker, Cheryl Mandel, mother of Lt. Daniel Mandel z"l, to the program's co-sponsors, OneFamily TogetherYashar LaChayal ישר לחייל, and Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey, and to the hundreds of guests who joined us to honor the memories of Israel's fallen soldiers and victims of terror. Yehi zichram baruch.

Yom Haatzmaut
There is really nothing like Yom Haatzmaut at BPY! Early childhood students went on a virtual trip to Israel to explore its water sources through interactive STEM stations at the "Kineret," "Yam Hamelach," and the "Mediterranean Sea." Of course, they also visited the "Kotel," stopped for snack at "Cafe Sababa," did some basic training exercises, and made their own pitot at a Bedouin tent.

Meanwhile, elementary and junior high school students came together for a beautiful communal Hallel, followed by dancing and daglanut practice. Then, they got to experience four different aliyot to Israel (from North Africa, Europe, Ethiopia, and Russia) through absolutely incredible interactive exhibits. Their Judaic studies teachers created fascinating reenactments, complete with costumes, props, sound effects, and elaborate staging so that students could trudge through the desert, escape the iron curtain, board boats and planes, and creep under the radar of British Mandate troops, all to reach Eretz Yisrael.

And, of course, it wouldn't be a BPY celebration without some spontaneous lunchtime dancing!

Daglanut!
Thank you to all the BPY family members who joined us for our famous daglanut, performed by students in kindergarten through eighth grade. It was fantastic!!!

Greetings From BPYers in Israel and Those Making Aliyah!
Thank you to all the BPYers in Israel who sent in video greetings for Yom Haaztmaut and tzetchem l'shalom to all the BPY families who are making aliyah this summer!
Fifth Grade Lemonade Stand
Kol hakavod to our incredible fifth graders who raised over $900 (!!!!) for Yashar LaChayal Widows and Orphans fund and the AMIT Children Sandwich Program through Thursday night's lemonade stand! The students have been working on this project for weeks through their math, science, and writing curricula. They experimented with different kinds of cups (measuring capacity, evaluating insulation, and researching environmental impact), wrote persuasive essays about which tzedakah they wanted their stand to support, and more! The morning after the sale, they calculated that the funds they raised will provide 750 school lunches to children in need (or a full year of lunches for four children). Wow! Special thank you to Morah Stephanie for leading this project and to Morah Jean, Morah Anna, Morah Amanda, and all the other teachers and parents who helped with this effort. Well done fifth grade!

BPY's President Addresses Bergen County Executives
BPY president Cheryl Rosenberg was a featured speaker at the Flag Raising Ceremony held by the Bergen County Executive and Board of Chosen Freeholders in conjunction with the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey to commemorate Yom Haatzmaut. We are proud that one of our eighth grade students participated in the ceremony as well! Kol hakavod!

Fifth Grades In Grammy's Torah Garden
Fifth grade finished building the beds in Grammy's Torah Garden this week and the violin shape is really becoming recognizable! They also learned about the melachot of choreish and zoreah (which they did in the garden), and the mitzvot of pe'ah and leket - both of which are found in this week's parsha. Thank you GrowTorah for another amazing gardening week!
Tzeydah LaDerech
Thank you to Rabbi Mordy Kuessous of the Benaroya Sephardic Center at Congregation Ahavath Torah for joining the eighth graders yesterday as a guest speaker for our Tzeydah Laderech ("provisions for the road") program. Rabbi Kuessous discussed the concept of emunah and the ways we can use challenges or difficulties to grow as individuals and in our relationship with Hashem. Todah rabbah Rabbi Kuessous for leading this insightful and inspiring conversation!

Second Grade Trip to the Turtleback Zoo
In science, second graders have been studying animals and designing their own zoo exhibits. Yesterday, they had the opportunity to visit a real zoo, observe the animals they have been researching, and meet an actual zoo curator who spoke with them about exhibit design, animal care, and conservation efforts. They are going to take what they learned and incorporate it into their own design ideas back in the BPY Discovery Room.  What a wonderful learning experience!

First Grade Trip to Museum Village
First graders have been studying one-room schoolhouses and yesterday, they got to experience one themselves at Museum Village! The children also toured other buildings from the same time period in American history, including a log cabin and a barn. They got to visit with a blacksmith and a candle maker and even made their own candles! What a fun and educational trip!

What You Do and What You Learn
When Tackling Problems without Clear Solutions
by Stanley Fischman
A few weeks ago I wrote an article in Divrei Yosef about a requirement that Northwestern University freshman engineering students tackle a project that often can't be solved. The rationale for this challenge is that many of these students have never experienced failure, denying them an important life skill. Attached to the Wall Street Journal article (Sue Shellenbarger February 23, 2016)

that featured this program was a very valuable and informative chart reproduced below. It describes the synergistic relationship between complex problem solving and vital areas of fundamental character development.

STRATEGY                                              WHAT YOU LEARN
Listen to and understand the people you are trying to help
Empathy
Be open to alternative ways of thinking
Creativity
Get help from others
Teamwork
Try many ideas, even strange
sounding ones
Brainstorming
Adopt an entrepreneurial attitude
Risk-taking
Accept the inevitable failures
Humility
Try and try again
