 Successful Highway Cleanup!
Thank you to all those who participated in the I-94 highway cleanup over the weekend of April 30 and May 1. It was a fantastic success!

Led by Ross Callahan, over 50 neighbors joined forces along I-94 over the two days. Our awesome team put forth a wonderful effort and collected over 42 bags of "treasure".

A big THANK YOU to everyone who participated! Taking care of our community takes all of us together!

Check out the SUPC blog for pictures!

And stay tuned for our next big planned cleanup in July!
When You Hear a Shot, Call a Cop
A lot of people aren't sure whether they should call the cops when they hear something. Maybe they don't want to get involved, or they're not sure it does any good, or they think they don't know anything worth reporting.

Here's an inside tip: Call.

Every time you hear a gun shot, or even what you think may be a shot fired, call it in. These calls help police to triangulate locations of gun fire, and it can help them find a crime scene as quickly as possible.

Also, the number reports from different parts of the city are used to help determine allocation of funds to different areas. The police department can't put the effort needed into our neighborhoods if they don't know where that effort is most needed. Also, all calls are documented to their area. When there are "clusters" of calls to a specific area, more squads are assigned to patrol those neighborhoods to make a presence and to watch for suspicious activity.

Also, you should always give an address, and not an intersection. Especially if you're reporting a problem at a specific property - give that address! Police often need a history on a specific property in order to take action.

DO NOT think you are bothering police. DO NOT be embarrassed that your suspicion might not turn out to be accurate. Police need your help to keep our neighborhoods safe. If in doubt, CALL!

Remember, safety in our community is everyone's business. Together, we can all make a difference.

McQuillan Park to be Redesigned
McQuillan Park, located at Laurel Ave. and Mackubin St., is scheduled to be revamped later this year, according to Bryan Murphy of St. Paul Parks and Recreation Department. The play area is 20 years old and the equipment will be replaced to improve safety and handicap accessibility.

Other improvements could include expanding the play area, adding amenities such as benches and tables and new landscaping.

The design team wants to hear from neighborhood residents about how the proposed improvements can best accommodate the surrounding community. Please take their ONLINE SURVEY at:

www.surveymonkey.com/r/McQuillan.

In addition, they are looking for advisory committee members to guide the redesign process. The plan is to complete the survey and form the committee within the next few weeks so we want to make sure that neighbors don't miss a chance to participate. Black Apprentice Training Program
The Rondo Community Land Trust (CLT) and the Neighborhood Development Center (NDC) have formed a partnership in developing the Black Apprentice Program.

The first training is now being planned for the summer of 2016. The goal is to recruit six to ten participants for the first class. The aim is to attract and provide resources to historically disadvantaged groups, specifically targeting support to African American owned businesses.  Participants that enroll in the Neighborhood Development Center's training class will learn accounting, bookkeeping, marketing, and other areas that are identified by the NDC staff and business applicants to ensure that they have a grounded understanding of running or expanding a small business.

Rondo CLT wants to ensure that the Selby Milton Victoria project has African American owned businesses. The training and support for additional small business will target small African American businesses and give them an opportunity to open a business in one of the many underutilized buildings on Selby. The project is intended to help support new and existing Selby business owners and encourage both self-sufficiency and the economic development of Selby Avenue and the neighborhood.

Don't Fall into Financial Crisis: Let Senior Partners Care Help!
An increasing number of Minnesota's low to moderate income individuals are at risk of sliding down the slippery slope toward financial crisis. The problem is becoming critical for thousands of older or disabled Minnesotans whose income is between 100% and 200% of the Federal Poverty Index.

These are people who are on Medicare, do not qualify for Medicaid, and are frequently unable to pay the balance of their health costs after Medicare has paid.  Fortunately, there is help for these Minnesotans, who meet eligibility requirements, with the Senior Partners Care program.

The Senior Partners Care program helps Medicare beneficiaries bridge the financial gap between what they owe on medical bills and what is covered by Medicare. Senior Partners Care is not insurance.  However, thanks to partnerships with hundreds of hospitals, clinics and providers statewide, seniors and disabled may have all or part of their healthcare debt waived by participating providers.

To qualify, seniors and disabled must have Medicare A and B, no supplemental insurance, meet income and asset thresholds, seek care from participating medical providers and submit an application with a modest annual fee, for approval.

For an application or to receive more information on Senior Partners Care call  952-767-0665  or toll free  1-888-541-5488 .  Or visit us at
