RE youth, families, and volunteers!

This Sunday 5/15, both the Junior High Youth Group (JHYG) and the Senior High Youth Group (SHYG) will attend service in support of our very special  Coming of Age  Credo service  with 10 youth and their mentors and a special five-year-old soloist singing our favorite Unitarian Universalist hymn, at 10:30.
It will be an inspiring day, that's a promise!

RE  begins about 15 minutes after we all join together to start the service. In  Religious Education, these groups will be operating for their next-to-last time this program year: Spirit Play (Kindergarten-grade 2) in Room 10, True Reflections (grades 3-5) in Room 7/8. Last day of this RE year is Sunday, 5/22. We hope to see you here at church as we take a moment to appreciate all the RE volunteers at the beginning of service.
Camp Norge
RE FAMILIES: please join us at our annual UUSS All Ages Camp June 10-12, 2016. UUSS families, children, and pets will all gather at the Sons of Norway recreation center known as Camp Norge. There is a large grassy meadow for tent camping and quaint, comfy rooms in the lodge. Activities for the kids include crafts, swimming, soccer, and of course marshmallow roasting at the camp fire. Pancakes on Sunday! Register after service and contact Christopher Jensen at 916-541-5750 if you have questions or need more information.

With thanks, Christopher Jensen
Call for help: RE Play Day, May 29!
Recruiting two or three RE parents/guardians to help plan and organize a RE Play Day for mixed ages on the last Sunday in May. Outside games paired with indoor crafts for a morning of fun and friendship as we wrap up our RE year. Please contact Miranda soon!
Our Whole Lives (OWL) at UUSS
In the new RE year this fall we want to offer the OWL program. OWL is a series of sexuality education curricula for different age groups and helps youth make informed and responsible decisions  about their sexual health and behavior. We are in the beginning stages of planning and recruiting teachers. If you have a child in grades 4-6 or in grades 7-9, please reach out to me at [email protected] to express your interest in enrolling your child in this program. Be sure to share their grade. For more information, please visit Our Whole Lives: Lifespan Sexuality Education or as always I am here to assist with questions.

Summer RE ArtWorks
What happens during summer Sundays for our RE children and youth, you  ask? Well, we gather a team of artistic volunteers from our congregation to help out. We schedule the artistic volunteers for two or more consecutive Sundays to share a talent with the group. The group contains a range of mixed ages of children and youth to build community and friendship. Our first day of Summer RE ArtWorks is Sunday, June 12. Looking forward to it!
Congregational Meeting this Sunday, 5/15, after service
Rev. Roger writes:
"For my senior minister's report, I will be announcing plans for the six-month sabbatical I am fortunate to be granted for next year and to talk about how this will affect the flow of life here at our very active, creative, lively and generous congregation.  Rev. Lucy will speak about the social justice umbrella theme for the coming year, Confronting Economic Inequality.  Also, some of our youth leaders are planning to propose that UUSS take a stand (along with our denomination's General Assembly) in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, with a sign or banner near the road. Click here to read my May Unigram newsletter column about it.

Everyone is welcome at this open meeting but IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO HAVE A QUORUM OF VOTING MEMBERS to conduct business.

Note about CHILD CARE: Our Room 11 Nursery will remain open until 1:00 PM so parents or guardians can attend this meeting. Let our child care staff Krystal and Yer, know your need for extended care when you arrive."

Wake Up & Smell the Coffee, May 22!
Our annual coffee donation day is Sunday, May 22. Your generous gifts will replenish the coffee cupboard and hospitality funds so we can offer refreshments to all members and guests in the coming months. Bring a pound or two (or five) of your favorite regular grind coffee, or a few boxes of tea. Or give a $10, $20 or $100 bill, so our volunteers can buy milk, sweetener, iced tea, etc. Bring your items on or before Sunday by 10:15. We'll cheer the beverage gods as we sing the UU parody, "Coffee, Coffee, Coffee." NOTE: No flavored coffees, and no whole beans, please. Regular or decaf, either is fine. We also welcome volunteers to make coffee available one Sunday a month or more. Thanks to current and past volunteers!
Bike Drive for Refugees at UUSS, noon Sunday, May 22
Click here to see the flyer about this fun event to raise funds-and bicycles! As refugee resettlement agencies work hard to welcome and help the many refugees being settled in our UUSS neighborhood, the leadership team of our Refugee Support Program is gearing up so the congregation can help!
Hosting Homeless Families at UUSS
Sign up to help at UUSS during Family Promise Week, May 15-22. Our volunteer leaders appreciate your help as families, singles, couples, UUSS members or guests, with any of these jobs: cooking and bringing a dinner; hosting at dinner time; overnight hosting teams (sleeping on mattresses on the floor), set up on Sunday afternoon, clean up next Sunday morning, doing laundry for lots of linens, bringing food supplies or personal care item supplies, or making a monetary contribution to UUSS Family Promise. Nancy Oprsal is trying to find one more overnight host for Thursday night and one more overnight host for Saturday night. Contact Nancy at (916) 482-5736.
