Puyallup High School student Logan Tarrant with teacher Lisa Muiznieks
Quick response and training save a life

Puyallup High School student Logan Tarrant had just finished class in the swimming pool on May 3 and was on his way to the locker room when he came to the rescue of an unresponsive student in the therapy pool.

Physical Education teacher Lisa Muiznieks could not get a pulse on the special needs student and immediately began CPR. She was assisted by Pool Manager Jennifer Nicholson while teacher Marc Wiese called 911. The paramedics arrived to find the student breathing on his own. Muiznieks rode in the ambulance to the hospital with the student and stayed with him until his parents arrived.

The student has recovered and returned to school on May 4.

Tarrant, a senior at Puyallup, has been a certified life guard for more than two years and works at the pool after school. He started school in Puyallup as a kindergartner at Karshner Elementary. He is also an Eagle Scout.

Muiznieks returned to work the same day. She has been Tarrant's teacher for four of the last six semesters and described him as a very responsible student who is always prepared and on time. "He's a calm individual. We talk to students at the beginning of the semester and tell them 'if there is an emergency this is what we do,'" she said.

She also credited Nicholson for her management of the pool. "Jen is observant. She noticed and immediately put the Emergency Action Plan in place," said Muiznieks. She said the staff are all highly trained and keep up with their certifications.

"Everything happened the way it was supposed to. We all have the temperament to handle an emergency and we practice. We didn't have to think about it - we just did what we needed to do," said Muiznieks who has been a teacher for more than 30 years and a lifeguard since she was 14 years old.

"It is likely the student would have drowned if not for the quick thinking of these specially trained staff and lifeguard student," said Superintendent Tim Yeomans.

They will be recognized at the Puyallup School Board meeting on Monday, June 6, 2016 at Stahl Junior High at 6:00 p.m.

Puyallup schools earn Washington State Achievement Award

Four Puyallup schools have earned the 2015 Washington Achievement Award in recognition of showing measureable progress in student academic performance.

Woodland Elementary received Overall Excellence, Spinning Elementary was named as a High Progress School, and Ridgecrest and Sunrise elementary schools each won Special Recognition - Mathematics Growth Award.

Overall Excellence (highest performing and top tier)
Schools qualify for recognition if they are among the top 5% of schools based on the Composite Achievement Index rating. The Composite Achievement Index rating is based on proficiency and growth for schools, not graduating students, and on proficiency, growth, and graduation for schools graduating students.

High Progress
Schools qualify for recognition if they are in the top 10% of schools making the most progress in the reading and math combined performance of all students, using the previous three years of data. The Progress Score (PS) is an average of an Achievement Score (A) and an Improvement Score (I).

Special Recognition - Mathematics Growth
Schools qualify for recognition if they are in the top 5% of the three-year average Median Student Growth Percentiles (MSGPs) in reading and/or math. To be eligible for recognition a school must have reportable school MSGPs in reading and/or math for the previous three years. Schools must not be identified for the Priority/Focus list.

The annual awards program, sponsored by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and State Board of Education, celebrates Washington's top-performing schools. The award recognizes schools and educators making a difference in student outcomes.

Washington Achievement Award winners are selected using the State Board of Education Revised Achievement Index and are based on statewide assessment data for the three previous years. The Achievement Index measures school performance, emphasizing improvement and recognition. Schools cannot be listed as Priority or Focus and must have at least 95 percent participation on state tests to qualify for recognition.
This year's award winning Puyallup schools, along with other schools in the district, have earned the Washington Achievement Award in past years. Ridgecrest received the Washington Achievement Award in 2011-2015; Spinning in 2013-15; Sunrise in 2013 and 2015; and Woodland in 2012-2015.

Superintendent Yeomans attended a recognition ceremony coordinated by OSPI in collaboration with the State Board of Education on May 10.

The Ridgecrest, Spinning, Sunrise, and Woodland administration and staff will be recognized by the Puyallup School Board at the June 6 meeting at Stahl Junior High beginning at 6:00 p.m.
18th Annual Dan Vesey - Deb Munson Art Show

Students across the Puyallup School District submit over 300 art entries annually.  The show is narrowed down to 100-125 pieces and those are juried.  The show will be held at the Karshner Museum and Center for Culture & Arts on May 18 from 4:00 -6:00 p.m., with an artist reception from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in the Stewart Elementary Gym.

The Dan Vesey-Deb Munson Art Awards are presented in honor of veteran art teachers Dan Vesey and Deb Munson. Both taught in the Puyallup School District for many years, inspiring both students and other teachers. They were well loved, served as mentors and both held the highest standards for creativity and originality. Dan and Deb both shared their gifts by visiting classes throughout the district, organizing events and furthering the arts in the community.

The Dan Vesey Awards begin in l998, as a memorial to his outstanding teaching career and creativity. Mr. Vesey taught in the Puyallup School District for 30 years. He was gentle, upbeat, generous, energetic, and a creative soul who inspired nearly everyone he met.   As Deb Munson, a student teacher of Dan's and an art teacher at Rogers High School for many years wrote: "Dan exemplified creativity and never hesitated to share his talent, time and energy with students young and old, colleagues, friends, and most importantly, his family."

Deb Munson began teaching at Governor John R. Rogers High School in 1974 and continued Dan Vesey's legacy. In addition to her lifelong career as an educator she served as an active leader in the arts community. She volunteered for everything from Valley Arts United, Arts Downtown, the Farmers Market, all parades and the Puyallup Fair Student Art Show. The best word used to describe Deb was joy - for her life, family and community.
