Epiphanies Happen!
Interim Rector's Invitation & Reflection

After all have been presented, the Bishop addresses the congregation, saying

Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support these persons in their life in Christ?

People:   We will.
Book of Common Prayer, p. 416

On Saturday, May 14, we will be richly blessed as four special people are welcomed as new or renewed members of our church. Vivian, Sol, and John will make adult confessions of faith and be received into the church; Ann reaffirms her vows to the 21st century Episcopal branch of the Jesus movement. It will be a day of great joy and expectation - not just for them but for the entire Epiphany parish. Of course with this blessing comes great responsibility.

As we gather at Washington National Cathedral (at 10:00am in the South Transept if you wish to join us!) we will speak for Epiphany, Episcopalians and Christians everywhere when we promise to do all in our power to support them in their life in Christ. You are part of that covenant with Sol, Vivian, John and Ann to be there for them on their journey of faith wherever that might take them.

Our celebration of their commitment will be part of the Pentecost service on Sunday. Between now and then, will you take a moment to do three things? First, say a prayer for Vivian, Sol, John and Ann. You can use our beloved BCP for help or pray your own but please pray for and with them.

15. For those about to be Baptized or to renew their Baptismal Covenant

O God, you prepared your disciples for the coming of the Spirit through the teaching of your Son Jesus Christ: Make the hearts and minds of your servants ready to receive the blessing of the Holy Spirit, that they may be filled with the strength of his presence; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Second, make a promise to do what you can to be supportive - not just of these fellow Christians but also of Epiphany. Transition is hard. Working together to demonstrate, in word and deed, God's never-failing love is the best way to welcome a new rector and create a place for all to connect with God.

Finally, offer yourself . Your gifts of time and talent make a difference. Whether you mentor a new member or volunteer to read at a service, your actions speak louder than words. We all grow in Christ when one is generous with their gifts.

Thank you for your spirit. Sol, Vivian, John and Ann will be connected forever to a wonderful, caring community of dedicated and compassionate Christians. It is my deep prayer everyone at Epiphany continues to demonstrate the abiding love Christ has for us all.

Faithfully,
Elizabeth
