2016 Virginia Synod Week of Service
September 4-11

Have you been looking for an excuse to wear your bright yellow "God's Work, Our Hands" t-shirt? Well go ahead and mark your calendar for September 4-11, our third annual Virginia Synod Week of Service.

The Week of Service coincides with The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America "God's Work, Our Hands" Sunday on September 11. This year the day of service falls on the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The ELCA has some great resources out this year for local congregations. Are you just getting started with your plans for your service project? Check out the 2016 Toolkit for resources that will help you brainstorm projects and publicize your service activity once you have all the details in order.

Volunteering in the community can be a powerful time of reflection as well as action. The Baptized Servants Learning Resource can  be used as either an individual or a small group tool. In the booklet it is written that, "Being baptized into Christ's life creates a whole new world of relationships - with God, with others and even with ourselves - that is characterized by loving, liberated service." Serving together is one way to deepen relationships in your community, discussing the reasons behind the service can help solidify relationship and strengthen individual faith.

In the past two years congregations have been quite creative with the ways they have chosen to love their communities. Oftentimes their project is an extension of something with which the congregation is already involved. From quilting to gardening to backpack programs--from the pictures it looked like the week of service was a chance for existing passion to spread throughout the congregation.

The Virginia Synod is blessed to partner with eight amazing organizations throughout the state. Our mission partners, Roanoke College, Southern Seminary, Lutheran Family Services, Virginia Lutheran Homes, National Lutheran Communities and Services, GraceInside, Hungry Mother Lutheran Camp and Caroline Furnace Camp, are all great options to consider when planning your project this year if you want to lift one of our great Lutheran organizations in the state.

Because this year's "God's Work, Our Hands" Sunday falls on September 11th, this may be the perfect opportunity to show the first responders in your area how much they are loved and appreciated.

In 2014 St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Vinton did just this during the Week of Service and made a stop by their local fire station so they could shine some light--both with the love of Jesus and through their shirts.

September will sneak up on us before we know it, so start planning now. That way you will have plenty of time to order your "God's Work. Our Hands" before the August 19th deadline. As you solidify your plans, make sure to let the Synod Office know about your project so we can celebrate how we are all being ambassadors for Christ together.
