HEC Releases New, Indiana-Focused Coal Ash Report
HEC recently released a detailed report on coal ash at the AB Brown coal plant in southwest Indiana. The new HEC report documents the ways in which coal ash can be a threat to public health and looks at AB Brown as an example.

After we burn coal, the ash that is left over contains toxic substances including arsenic, which is carcinogenic; cadmium, which is toxic to the kidneys; and lead and mercury, which are damaging to the brain. There are more than 200 sites in the US where coal ash has contaminated our groundwater or rivers, including more than 10 sites in Indiana. Coal ash can also impact health when it is dry and wind blown as inhalable dust.

You can read the summary or the entire report here.

Given that Indiana annually generates more than 7 million tons of coal ash per year,  HEC is actively advocating for Indiana to improve its coal ash disposal. Be sure to follow us on Facebook or Twitter for calls to action!
HEC to Unveil Mounds Greenway Economic Study
Public Forums to Follow
HEC will be releasing our economic impact study for the proposed Mounds Greenway in June, with presentation of the study's findings occurring at public forums in Chesterfield, Daleville, and possible Yorktown. Additional public meetings will occur later in the summer in Anderson and Muncie.

To date 35 organizations and businesses have endorsed the Mounds Greenway! HEC is continuing to reach out to community leaders and groups in east central Indiana to expand support. In addition, w e are planning another "Ride for the Mounds" this September.

Stay up to date on the Mounds Greenway, our new economic study, and greenway events at  moundsgreenway.org or at our dedicated Mounds Greenway Facebook page
HEC Continues Challenge of Unjust Factory Farm Law
pig farm In the fall of last year, HEC filed a landmark lawsuit to challenge the constitutionality of Indiana's unjust "Right to Farm" laws and put an end to the suffering of two Hendricks County families from the unimaginable stench and air pollution from a newly built factory farm with 8,000 hogs.

Winning this legal battle will remove the special protections for factory farms that have prevented rural Hoosiers from holding polluting factory farms accountable for the harm they cause to the environment, public health and quality of life. The Defendants in the case are backed by the immense financial and political resources of big agribusiness and the livestock industry and have a team of high-paid lawyers on their side. Despite the intimidation and obstructionist tactics of the defense counsel, HEC is pushing back, with our Senior Staff Attorney conducting research and taking depositions of the Defendants and key witnesses.

Litigating a high stakes case such as this requires extraordinary time and financial resources. We hope we can count on you to financially support this important legal effort.
