The S&P 500 (+0.4%) underperformed most asset classes including:
  • Gold (+3.9%)
  • Non-US equities (+2.7% in USD / +1.2% in local terms)
  • Small cap equities (+1.6%)
  • Corporate bonds (+1.4%)
While the S&P 500 managed to beat only a handful of assets like:
  • Cash (unchanged)
  • Long-term Treasury bonds (-0.5%)
Commodity-oriented sectors were the best performers
  • Crude oil rose over 20% for the month
  • Silver increased over 15%
Value stocks beat Growth stocks for the fourth consecutive month in April, the longest streak of Value outperformance since early 2013

Reducing the Risk of Outliving Your Money

"What is your greatest retirement fear?" If you ask retirees that question, "outliving my money" may likely be one of the top answers.  Retirees and pre-retirees alike share this anxiety. In a 2014 Wells Fargo/Gallup survey of more than 1,000 investors, 46% of respondents cited that very fear; 42% of the respondents to that poll were making $90,000 a year or more.

Retirees face greater "longevity risk" today. According to an analysis of Census Bureau data by the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College, the average retirement age in this country is 65 for men and 63 for women. Many of us will probably live into our eighties and nineties; indeed,

Active Heroes is a 501(c)(3) charity with national programs assisting veterans and military families with a vision to end veteran suicide. Active Heroes' mission is to support U.S. military service members, veterans and their families through physical, educational and emotional programs providing coping skills in an effort to eliminate veteran suicide.

They are hosting their first ribbon cutting to honor the life and final mission of Major Justin Finch, U.S. Army Retired, and festivities will include a ribbon cutting ceremony for the first cabin, ground breaking of the second cabin site, guest speakers, hay-ride
tours of the Retreat, a food truck and DJ.  All are welcome!
