- When word spread that the Denver Botanic Gardens was holding a photo contest, the Spartans were there in a flash. Mr. Forrester and Mr. Showers chaperoned the CareerX trip that gave students the opportunity to demonstrate their photographic talent. There ended up being over 60 entries to the contest, and Anna Fritschen and Jordan Pounds-Crihfield took home two of the three top awards. Way to go, ladies!

My Brothers Keeper (MBK) is a White House initiative in which President Obama has challenged cities, communities, businesses, organizations, educational institutions and individuals to step up and
identify issues that most often keep boys and young men of color from achieving success. This national initiative focuses on creating opportunities to change their paths, so they can reach their full potential. There was a citywide nomination process open to the public to nominate any organization and/or individual who was currently doing this work in Denver ... working and helping boys and young men of color change their paths. Only 25 were selected and honored, hence the first inaugural group ... MBK25. Congratulations!

Spartan Wins National Technology Award
|
Leo Busse continues to excel through her first two years at TJ after winning an award for Aspirations in Computing.
On April 23rd, sophomore Leo Busse won the National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT) Award for Aspirations in Computing for her outstanding aptitude and interest in the subject. Along with her many other achievements during her time at TJ, Busse is on the road to further success and turning heads as she goes.

Two Spartans were honored as a part of the inaugural class of Access Opportunity.
TJ juniors Amber Mosley and Gregory Gallardo have recently become members of Access Opportunity, an organization that invests in students who have great potential, ensuring they have a smooth transition to college. The Access Opportunity program focuses on helping the individual needs of each student, working with them through high school until their college graduation, assuring them a successful head-start into their future career. I just wanted to introduce all of you to the New DECA Officer Team for the 2016-2017 school year. These students were selected by a panel of their peers, and each went through an interview and grading process that included: GPA, attendance, activity involvement, letters of recommendation, fundraising, and DECA competitions. I believe all of them will represent our school and community with integrity, class, and character. TJ Spartans are participating in a community service project to help organize and develop the first Denver Police Department Museum. The museum will exhibit the history of the Denver Police department, as well as some of the past and current tools and technologies utilized by officers and law enforcement staff. The museum also wants to include interactive exhibits, especially for young visitors to the museum and older students wanting to explore the workings of law enforcement and the study of criminal science. The museum also hopes to create a bridge between the Denver Police Department and the community, attract Denver visitors and especially engage with the younger citizens of Denver and the Metro area.
One main focus of the museum is a memorial section that serves as a tribute to officers killed in the line of duty. Starting Monday April 25, student volunteers will be working to raise money to purchase two flags that will be placed at the incident locations of fallen officers. The flags will serve as a landmark and a memorial to those officers throughout the city of Denver. Volunteer students will be collecting "Coins for Cops" over the next two weeks,
collecting donations before school and during the lunch hour.
If you would like to donate to the project, please see volunteers Vasi Reiva (10), Gwen McClennan (10) or Tyler Moffat(10), or you can see Ms. Starbuck in room 125. Our goal is to raise $300, with $200 going towards the memorial flags and $100 going to the "Coffee & Donuts with the Cops" event on May 13 here at TJ. Student volunteers and staff are invited to participate in that event and meet other volunteers working toward the development of the Denver Police Department Museum, neighborhood police officers and city council supporters.
After our fist day of collection, we have already raised over $20, so we are on our way! If you have any questions or know of any students that would like to participate and earn community service hours and experience, or if you would like to donate, please see Ms. Starbuck in room 125! Thank you for supporting our men and women in BLUE!

We will have a yearbook signing party on May 13th during the Backyard Bash. Pre-ordered yearbooks will also be distributed at this time. Students will need their IDs in order to claim their book. If you haven't already purchased a yearbook, and you would like it to arrive before the signing party, you should order online or see Mr. Forrester. He has a limited amount of books for sale. To purchase a book online, go to the TreeRing website at any time from this point forward. Please click the 'Aristocrat Yearbook' link on the TJ Journal for directions on how to purchase online. It can be found under the 'News and Events' menu.

Night Out - Rescheduled for Friday, May 13th

Any boys interested in playing tennis fall 2016 please attend a short and informative meeting at 2:15 May 18 in the lunchroom.
We will have a hitting session if you want to get on the courts after the meeting.

Club volleyball is a program for athletes who are looking to take their volleyball skills to the next level.
When high school athletes across the nation finish up their school volleyball seasons in November, another season is right around the corner. Between the end of November and the middle of December, club volleyball teams begin preparing for the upcoming club season, which typically lasts from early December to late April. Club volleyball is a competitive environment that is recommended for players who are serious about the sport and who are looking for a possible future in volleyball, whether it be playing in college or going into the sport professionally. TJ's SkillsUSA team of dedicated students represented TJ with pride this season at the state competition and are on their way to competing at the Nationals Conference.
TJ's SkillsUSA program competed in the state competition and qualified for the nationals competition that will take place in Louisville, Kentucky on the week of June 20th. Through hard work and dedication, the team at has had a very successful season so far this year, winning many small competitions. Several students involved in the program headed to the state competition starting April 6th in Colorado Springs. Read more

Support Spartan Football...Be a Triathlon Volunteer!
|
Spartan Football is raising funds by participating in the Dillon Triathlon on Sat., Sept 10th as volunteers. For every hour of volunteer time we earn and average of $5-10 for the football program at TJ.
Not everyone in the volunteer group has to be part of the football team or a student at TJHS. We can use as many helping hands as possible. Volunteers must be 16 years or older so parents, friends, siblings and anyone that wants to spend a day in the beauty of Dillon and experience the excitement of a triathlon while helping the participants and sponsors and benefiting TJ HS can volunteer for as little as 4 hours and up to 10 hours.
We need at least 10 volunteers that put their group name as "TJ HS Football" when signing up online for a time slot in order to earn the funds. Please visit this site t
o see the possible volunteer positions.
All volunteers will receive an awesome Under Armour long sleeve tech shirt, and community service hours.
