From the Fleet Captain

Fleet Captain Capt'n Ron is busy planning the trips of a lifetime.
HELLO SPRING! Come on, you know you wanna, come join in the fun and be a Pirate, Pauper, Polynesian and more.
On March 19th the annual sock burning "the Life of a Penguin" was held at the Marina. The weather was very chilly, rainy but fun was had by all that attended. We had a roaring fire, plenty of beverages and soup. The REYC "Red Eye Yacht Club" Land Cruisers scheduled visiting the sock burning as their last stop of the day. The coveted "Penguin Award" for the ugliest socks was presented to PC Gary & Robyn Newswanger's granddaughter Lilly. What a sweetie, she brought over 30 pairs of old socks and shared them with others!
Followed up with the land & water Pirate Cruise to the Privateer Festival in Fells Point on April 17th. The brave at heart, jumped on their boats and took an early cruise on over, they were your Fleet Captain and mate, Charlotte; Commodore Tom & Vice Commodore Sharron Gilbert; PC Charlie & Barbie Wright, Troy & Carol Martin, Jeff & Patty Skinner, Jim & Kirsten Barbour and by land was Carl Ostiguy. It was a full-scale land invasion with music, food & libation with Jell-O shooters.

Bowley's White House
|
... and now a little history, it is said that the "White House" was once a hunting spot for U.S. Presidents.
(excerpts from The Avenue News, July 2, 2008)
Bowleys Quarters has changed quite a bit since its early days as a rural area people mainly traveled to in order to fish and hunt. The peninsula is named for Daniel Bowley, a wealthy sea captain and merchant. Bowley came to America from England in the 1700s. He settled in Baltimore and made his fortune by sending ships full of Maryland products to England. The ships were then returned to Bowley carrying English goods.
Since he was very wealthy, Bowley was able to purchase over 2,000 acres of land in and around Baltimore. One such tract of land he owned was located between Seneca Creek and Middle River. Since Bowley used this area to quarter his slaves it became known as "Bowley's Quarters." The slaves who lived in Bowleys Quarters during the 18th Century spent most of their time fishing along the waterfront areas of the peninsula.
In 1807 Daniel Bowley died at the age of 63. Before his death his son William acquired the Bowleys Quarters property. William Bowley built a house on the property, which became known as "Old Bowley's" or the "Bowley House." After William Bowley died and the Civil War ended abolishing slavery, the descendents of William Bowley sold Bowleys Quarters to a group of Philadelphia millionaires who turned the property into a game preserve. They stocked the area with pheasant, grouse, and ducks and used "Old Bowley's" as a clubhouse. Presidents Grover Cleveland and Benjamin Harrison both traveled to Bowleys Quarters to hunt and President Cleveland frequently stayed at "Old Bowley's."
