Congratulations to the cast and crew of the PHS Drama Company who recently put on four amazing performances of "Hairspray" at the PHS Theater. The show, directed by PHS Theater Teacher Terry Sandler, was double cast for the lead roll of Tracy Turnblad, with freshman Kennedy Bordas and junior Arianna Hurtado each giving the character their own unique flair.

Congratulations to Peekskill High School's Advanced Science Research (ASR) student Brittney Pauta for being accepted to the New York Medical College STAR Program, which matches a student to conduct authentic research with a medical scientist/professor at NY Medical College. Brittney is the first PHS ASR student to be accepted to this program! She will work this summer with Dr. Kobets to research epigenetics. When Brittney returns in the fall, she will have real data to write her research paper, and compete in prestigious fairs. Keep up the great work, Brittney!

In honor of National Poetry Month, Woodside Elementary School hosted the 1st Annual Multilingual Poetry Café. The Emergent Bilingual Leadership Team (EBLT) designed the event as a night that would integrate poetry with world languages as part of an initiative with CUNY NYSEIB to use bilingualism as a resource for instruction.
Woodside students were encouraged to write an original poem or select a favorite poem to recite. Thirty-eight Kindergarten and Grade 1 students performe
d their poems at the Poetry Café before an audience of administrators, teachers, staff, and more than 55 parents. Students wrote a variety of poems focused on family, friendship, favorite animals, and themselves as special people. Shel Silverstein and Dr. Seuss were favorite authors. Poems were expressed in English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, and Mandarin Chinese.

Thanks to a grant from Broadway Alliance, the young women of Summit Academy had the opportunity to attend a performance of "Eclipsed" on Broadway. The play, starring Lupita Nyongo, is a powerful exploration of the terrible choices women had to make during the second Liberian Civil War. Students took the train and enjoyed lunch in Bryant Park and a visit to the New York Public Library before the play.

On Sunday, April 3 the Peekskill Iron Devils Robotics Team took part in the New York Rube Goldberg competition at the Engineering Expo in White Plains, coming in second place out of 10 teams from across the state.
The Rube Goldberg Machine Contests are designed to encourage teamwork and out-of-the-box problem solving for students of all ages. STEM and STEAM friendly, Rube Goldberg Machines tackle the most mundane tasks and ask participants to create their own overly elaborat
e and hilariously conceived contraptions in honor of the competition's founding father. This year's challenge required teams to open an umbrella without any manual intervention.
After a long winter of preparation, Peekskill High School students from the Robotics program came up with a contraption to do just that.
"The project is pretty challenging," said Peekskill Robotics Teacher Carlo Vidrini. "The machine has to stay into predetermined parameters as far as dimensions, and in order to be admitted to the pit it has to have at least 20 steps before it accomplishes the task."
In addition to building the machine, students had to record step by step engineering notes to be presented to a panel of judges as well.
The team's second place win in this year's contest comes after they placed fourth in last year's competition.
"Kudos to our team," Vidrini said. "Our students represented their school well and I could not be more proud of all of them for this enormous success."

Woodside students celebrated Arbor Day by planting a beautiful floribunda crabapple tree on the side of the school's parking lot. At the ceremony, students read facts about trees and Arbor Day, as well as lines from Dr. Seuss' "The Lorax." The tree was dedicated to the building's multiple retirees.

Peekskill Middle School students in Mr. Tabone and Mr. Shropshire's Core-X class represented PKMS admirably on their recent trip to the United Nations.
The field trip served as the culmination of the class' exploration into the many refugee crises around the world. Students had the opportunity to meet with Chief of Migration Bela Hovy in the UN offices. Mr. Hovy was kind enough to take some time from his day to talk to the students about his experiences working in the divis
ion and in refugee camps, and answered students' questions, which they had prepared prior to the trip.
"Our kids were on point - thoughtfully, and for some, bravely, asking either their prepared questions or ones they developed at the moment," Shropshire said.
Shropshire noted that the students were fully engaged throughout the entire trip and that the experience was one his students will never forget.
"As expected, the trip was a great success," Shropshire said. "Every step of our journey, from the walk to the train, to the train trip, to our tours of Grand Central and our ultimate destination, the United Nations, contributed to every one of our students' growth."
