Pentecost is this Sunday
May 15
and it is for ALL Ages!
You are invited to wear red -- shoes, socks, pants, shirts, hats, a scarf, a tie -- if it's red, it's in season!
Throughout the Easter season, the readings have led us in an exploration of the acts of the Spirit in the early church. These faith ancestors responded to God's powerful presence in lives committed to mutual ministry and to showing up.
Pentecost Sunday is a day to celebrate the breath and fire of the Spirit that lives and moves and acts among God's people. The story of the first Pentecost is a foundational story of the Christian faith and is an important for everyone in the church - young and old, new to the faith and those who have been part of a faith community from childhood.
Pentecost is sometimes called "the birthday of the church" and we will have a program and activities for ALL Ages at St. Mark's from 9:30 - 10:15 a.m. Come be renewed by God's Spirit!

Confirm not Conform News

This is the date and time for the Confirm not Conform Blessing service with Bishop Jeff Lee. Confirmation and Reception Preparation for Adults -
On Saturday, June 11, the Bishop will be worshiping with us at 3:30 p.m. for confirmation and reception (for those who were confirmed in another denomination but would like to be formally received into the Episcopal Church). If you would like to participate in a small group for faithful formation as preparation for confirmation or reception, please let Pastor Debra know by Sunday, May 15 as we will begin meeting that week.

Midweek Lunch: Come and join us!
There are two weekly opportunities to serve our neighbors who struggle with hunger and homelessness. Every Tuesday from 6:00-6:30 pm, lunches are packed in the kitchen here at St. Mark's, and every Wednesday lunch is served at 11 am. On Wednesday, volunteers are asked to arrive by 10:30 am and stay until 1 pm.
Lunch packing and serving is a great way to get to know members of your church family and meet others from St. Matthew's, our partner in this ministry. Please join us as we joyfully build a deeper sense of community both within our church and more broadly in Evanston. You can make this commitment to fit your schedule: weekly, monthly, or every once in a while! Do you have summers off from school or work? Start thinking about ways you can plug in to this ongoing program.
Our Midweek Lunch Ministry is growing! We have started a partnership with the King Home on Oak Ave. On the first Tuesday of every month, King Home residents will be making the sandwiches in their lounge. Volunteers are needed at the usual time, 6 pm, to transport lunch packing materials over to the King Home and provide assistance to the residents while they make sandwiches.

Third Sunday Food and Sock Drive -
On the third Sunday of each month, St. Mark's will collect non-perishable food items to be shared with local food pantries. On Sunday May 15, please bring your boxes of cereals, cans of soup, jars of peanut butter and other non-perishables with you to church. The big red shopping cart will be waiting for you at the back of the sanctuary. This month's donations will be given to the Salvation Army.
In addition to your donation of non-perishable food, you are also encouraged to donate a pack of new socks that will benefit our sisters and brothers at the Hospitality Center. Thank you for your generosity!

| Spring cleaning: Book donations- Now that Spring has sprung, you might be doing some Spring cleaning. If you come across any books that you are looking to give to a new home, bring them to church with you any Sunday in the month of May and leave them in the parlor in the designated box. The books will be donated to the Hospitality Center upstairs for the guests to enjoy. |

Wear Orange for Gun Violence Awareness, Support National Gun Violence  Awareness Day June 2
In 2013, teens on the southside of Chicago started to wear orange to honor a friend shot and killed in a park near their school. Three years later, what started in their high school has become
a national movement.
Want to do more? Here are some ways to spread the word:
- Take pictures of yourself, friends, family wearing orange
- Post those pictures on social media using TWO hashtags: #WearOrange and #Episcopal.

St. Andrew's Dinner and a Concert- You are invited to join Pastor Debra and others from St. Mark's at a fundraiser for St. Andrew's Pentecost Episcopal Church on June 18th at 7:00 p.m. at the Levy Center in Evanston, 300 Dodge Ave. Enjoy Caribbean Gospel music, Caribbean cuisine, and a visit from Bishop Jeffrey Lee. ECW Altar Guild Conference
will take place on Saturday, June 11 at Calvary Episcopal Church, 105 Maple Street, Lombard from 8:30 - Noon.
Altar guild members and anyone with an interest in the history of our church are invited to attend this half day conference. Our featured event will be a showcase of vestments from across the diocese. Historical garments international and contemporary items will be modeled and displayed. Workshops will include: Safe Storage: Caring for Vestments and Altar Textiles; Chrismons: Needlworked Ornaments; and An Introduction to the Basics of the Altar Guild Ministry. Coffee and registration begin at 8:30am. The day will conclude with lunch and fellowship at noon. Registration and lunch is $15 in advance and $20 at the door.

Going Where the Youth Are: Being Church
|
The Church is wherever God's people are gathered and for our youth that is often not at St. Mark's - the building - because they are involved in so many extra-curricular activities. Imagine the positive message we might share with our young people by Being Church where they are - at the ice rink, on the baseball diamond, at the debate club, at their concert. Let's show up and cheer for our young people. Let's Be Church Where the Youth Are! Take pictures, congratulate often, and remind our young people that they too are Being the Church wherever they are!

Meals at Home: Volunteers needed for meal delivery
Meals at Home delivers meals to home bound residents of the North Shore. Meals are provided from local hospitals and restaurants Monday through Saturday and delivered throughout Chicago's North Shore. Volunteers deliver meals at least once a month between 11 am and 1:30 pm. Drivers must be at least 21 years old with a valid license and vehicle insurance, but all ages are welcome. The Unitarian Church of Evanston presents a spectacular concert on Saturday, May 21, 2016, 7:30 p.m. at 1330 Ridge Ave. featuring Howard Levy with Kalyan Pathak, Larry Gray and Jean Christophe Leroy. Howard Levy's Musical Worlds concert will include World Music, Afro-Cuban sacred chants, Vedic and Jewish traditions, as well as the music of Bach, original compositions, blues and some free Jazz improvisation - a truly eclectic program. A variety of instruments will be played from the west, Africa, India and Asia.

The Unitarian Church of Evanston will present "An Evening of Storytelling and Sharing" on Friday, May 13, 2016. The theme will be "Exploring Racism" and is targeted to adults and high school youths. This event will continue UCE's year-long work on racial justice issues. Susan O'Halloran and Mama Edie Armstrong will tell their stories beginning at 7PM after a potluck supper in the Unitarian Church Sanctuary. Adults and older teens are invited to join us for this fun and educational community gathering. The potluck supper will start at 6:00 PM. You are invited to bring a dish to share for 8 people. Tai Chi Chuan is an ancient Chinese martial art that promotes well-being by circulating the chi of the body through a series of slow, relaxing movements. The Human Process teaches the Yangstyle short form each Saturday morning at St. Mark's. Practicing Tai Chi helps replenish energy reserves, improves balance, loosens tight muscles and brings more flexibility to joints and ligaments. It is a cardiovascular and weight-bearing exercise. Evanston Sings: A Community Choir-
Do you like to sing? Perhaps only in the car or shower? There is a community choir that would benefit from your voice! Every Saturday, the Evanston Sings choir rehearses at Friendship Baptist Church (2201 Foster St.) at 3 pm. Although rehearsals have already begun, people are more than welcome to join and catch up on the music (gospel and old spirituals). This choir has gathered for the purpose of having a concert on Friday, June 17. All ticket sales from the concert will go to benefit the Mayor's Summer Youth Employment Program. Evanston Creative Writing Group- Do you like to write? Do you like to be creative but find it challenging sometimes to put yourself on the page? Do you enjoy receiving challenging prompts that spur your creativity? The Evanston Creative Writing group is a creative prompt group designed to get you on the page and start the creative juices flowing. Each meeting one member will act as the Prompt Master, offering a writing prompt like a picture, a first line, an object, or even a single word. From these prompts members will write for fifteen to twenty minutes, creating a unique and original story, or perhaps creating something that will be the start of something bigger. Please note that this is not a critique group. We offer positive comments on what our authors create, understanding that the writing generated within our group is rough or "first-draft". We accept all members, from those who are serious about writing to those who use the time offered to blow off some creative steam. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month in the library at St. Mark's. For more information visit us online here.

Evanston English Country Dance Group
This group meets every other Wednesday in Cunningham Hall. All dances are taught and prompted. We learn English Country dances devised from pre-1650 to the present. Jane Austin would recognize much of the dancing we do. Once a month, we have live music performed by Putting on Aires; the other Wednesdays, the music is from an extensive CD collection. You are welcome to come with or without a partner. Wear comfortable shoes (the type you would use to walk a mile) and casual clothing.
