Rule of the Week

Question

What is the best way to handle a rules dispute or uncertainty in stroke play while on the course. Am I allowed to play two balls and research the rule after the round?

Answer

Rule 3-3a allows if a competitor is doubtful of his/her rights or the correct procedure during the play of a hole to, without penalty, complete the hole with two balls.

After the doubtful situation has arisen and before taking further action, the competitor must announce to his marker or fellow competitor that he/she intends to play two balls and wish ball he/she wishes to count if the Rules permit.

The competitor must report the facts of the situation to the Rules Committee or local Pro before returning his/her scorecard. If the competitor fails to do so, he/she is disqualified.

Happy golfing and remember the Rules Matter.
